Built in mic-location?

The mic for phone and voice input on my WK was in the review mirror. Any one know where it is in the '14 WK2? I talk to my elderly mom alot, she has difficulty understanding me. Would love to talk more directly to the mic. Really hate headsets, BTW. Also, anyone ever seen a boom mic added to a system like this. Love the whole UConnect compared with other factory systems I've used! Thanks FCA.

Suggestion for your mom. Mine is 93 and has the same problem. She found she can hear the phone much better if she puts it on speaker phone. Of course you need to have a phone system that will allow you to put the hand set speaker on speaker phone mode. The mic in my new Cherokee is in the mirror so I am guessing your's is too.

Re: Built in mic-location?

You're right about that, Macfan. Mom has had some success in the past with the speaker on her phone. Problem now is that at 92 she can't remember how to work the speaker and can't see it anyway 'cause she's too blind. God help me if I get to that point!! I usually resort to turning off the bluetooth on the phone and talk to her "directly." Wold love to keep the system going, though, since I drive alot cross-country a few times a year, not to mention California laws when I'm there. Oh well. Thanks!

Two microphones on the top of the rear-view mirror.

Ah...I see them now...those hooded protrusions on top. Never had my head up far enough to see right on the very top. The old one was in the bottom "tab-like" part of the mirror body. Thanks!

Re: Built in mic-location?

long shot- i know- but does she use a cell phone?

If so the newest cellphones have "HD Voice" (or whatever they call it)- basically if your carrier has LTE they use Voice over LTE (aka VoLTE) with a much better quality codec than the old 2g/3g system.

IF both phones are HD Voice ready and (currently*) on the same carrier the clarity is amazingly better. My phone had it and i got my one kid a new phone that has it also- first time i called him i was amazed the difference even through the uconnect handsfree.

(*supposedly ATT and Verizon are working on interconnecting calls for later in 2015)

RatShack used to carry some reasonable "over the hairdo" headsets for 20-30 bucks for hooking to the phone itself. The ones with the foam ball don't seem to work any better than the ones with the naked but larger stalk.

A gaming headset would work but there is cheap and there is good.

The mic is in the mirror, and in a heavy rainstorm it tends to pick up the rain better than it does your voice.

Re: Built in mic-location?

HD Voice sounds like a winner, if a cell was an option for her. She used to use a Jitterbug cell. But now, being functionally blind and loosing cognitive ability, no chance. If HD ever gets to cross over to land lines, maybe VOIP, now there's a thought.

I think that's the end game. I read a blurb that one of the european companies was setting up to complete HD voice calls from their cell division to their VOIP division.

Apparently that's a bigger headache though- from what I understood (so maybe wrong)- everyone with LTE actually agreed on something and they all use the same modern codec so intercarrier VoLTE calls should be pretty simple- just switch the bits from one network to another. BUT HD for landlines apparently is based on ISDN's codec which is quite a bit older (1980s?) so they need to transcode it at some point.
