Head unit experts.. Help please?

I thought I had this figured out.. On a head unit, Lets say Pioneer, If it is rated at 14 watt RMS and my current unit is 18 watt RMS, would that cause my speakers to sound weaker? Not sure if this will make sense since I am pissed off about buying a head unit I didn't really want!

My current setup is basic, I have the stock BA amp but replaced all my speakers last year with RF Power and they have been great! My Jensen (60Wx4 18Wx4 RMS) has been great, but with the Pioneer, the sound sounds plain! even with a little tweaking of the EQ.

Before I run out and buy something different, What would you guys recommend I do?

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

I know this doesn't exactly answer your question but I figured a little help is better than none.

"How powerful an amp do I need?
Choose an amplifier whose power output is rated at least 70% to 125% of the power handling of the speakers you'll be amplifying. Make sure you're comparing the RMS power ratings of both the amp and speakers. And remember — it's better to overpower your speakers a little than to send them too little power."

Also you might want to take a look at this link.

Good luck!

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

Thanks a bunch, that does help.

Just thought of something, I had a shop run speaker wires straight to the speakers so I can hook up a aftermarket head unit on my WK with BA system a few years ago, so I am guessing the BA amp isn't doing anything? lol that sucks and I wonder what I would have to do to re-wire it.. One problem gets fixed and another one pops up!

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

It depends on the head unit. Can you post the two models? No all head units are made equal. Just because you see a touch screen running for $600 doesnt mean its going to sound kick ass. It will likely have the same audio processing power of say a $200 headunit. Its just the screen and nav is what jacks up the price. I generally look at specs and try to find a headunit with at least a 16bit processor. Although I prefer 24bit headunits (like the one in my build, click my sig). Backed by a true CEA certified powerful amp and a 24bit processing headunit, it will blow many audio rigs out of the water.

When looking at headunits, not only is the internal sound processor important, the power of the RCA outputs matter as well. A head unit that pumps out 5v to its RCA outputs compared to a headunit that only does 2v, the latter is significantly better as there is more power.

More power = cleaner sound.
Higher the sampling = crisper and more defined sound

Myth: Most speakers blow from too much volume
Fact: Most speakers blow from under powering and being overly distorted

The BA amp is controlled by a single data wire that turns the volume up or down. In fact, the factory headunit does nothing but tell the amp what to play... it even makes the amp take care of the balance and fade functions!

To get the BA amp to play nice with an aftermarket unit will require a PAC unit to work with the Can Bus system in your Jeep. These days its all plug and play and not too much youll need to learn.

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

Sorry for the delay, work is a bit crazy!
I could not find the processor info on either of the two.

Here are there specs..
He is what I had
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_110VM95...ures_and_specs

This is the one I replaced it with.
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130MVP8...ures_and_specs

I also found that my speaker wires are rotting? when I was hooking it up from behind the deck, I know that is not normal so that might be my sound problem. It looks green similar to a battery terminal. I should replace those asap and hope that helps.

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

Yeah definately fix any corroded wires and try to figure out why they did in such a short time. I also had a Pioneer head unit for a while until I put in my INAW900BT, and also found that out of the box it was weak sounding. You need to tweak the parametric eq a bit. In the low range I set the frequency to 60hz and +3. Also check that the high pass filter (HPF on the deck) is turned off. And remember that the Pioneer's volume scale goes up to 62, so you need to run it up above 30 or 35 to start to get decent volume.

I do need to mess with the EQ a bit more, so far I have it pretty decent until I replace all my speaker cables. What would be an ideal gauge? my bass has a baffled sound which I am blaming the corroded wires.

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

Hmmm.... the Pioneer should be night and day difference judging by the general specs and we are comparing it to a Jensen here. Lol. I gotta hit the sack but Ill dwell on this a bit more later.

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

For some reason I thought the stereo guy wired my speaker wires from the amp to the head unit, looks like they are wired directly to my speakers.. I found that out because I disconnected the BA amp and the toons were still on! lol go figure. I wonder if it would be hard to wire the BA amp back up with the Pioneer? It has more balls than the Pioneers internal amp. Any thoughts?

Re: Head unit experts.. Help please?

W.O.W.

Where in the hell did you take your car to get wired?! I would do some ass kicking if I were you, they should have used the PAC system to properly get the BA amp working with the new unit... your bill would have gone up about a $100 too if they did... or if they did in fact use a PAC but didnt properly wire it.
