Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

Pix during the day with the lights on. At night the heater settings has a nice blue glow, because of the reflector piece behind it. I like it.

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

the way to change the color of the PRND bezel and others that the led/bulbs arent colored is to use a gel cellaphane that is used in theatre lights. It will take some testing to get the color right...but it has been done on others cars/platforms. It can be purchased at theatre supply stores/websites. It holds up excellent to heat etc.

I believe robpp posted a link to this type of product. But I think with the additional layer of that material the light output would be less than it is now. I just spent the last 2 hours thinking and drawing ideas up that are in my head. I am trying to figure out a way to remove the plastic reflector piece in the shift bezel and replace it with a cuircut board with leds directly under the prnd settings. I think it can be done, one led for each setting. If my ideas and thinking is correct I should have something to work with by the end of the week. I just hope the power source is enough from the stock board to support the added leds needed for it.

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

Ever go to a theater, where they have spot lights and different colored fronts they put over the lights, its the same thing. But it would not work properly in the case of the prnd bezel because the reflector plastic piece is blueish and installing another color piece over the lights would make it alot dimmer. So to make the light output the same there needs to be a way to either change the stock blue reflector, or even remove it altogether. Since I want blue leds I think I can get away with swapping the stock green leds with blue leds, but any other color needs more modification. But it can be done, Jeep managed to do it right, so why cant we?

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

I did this on another vehicle I owned previously. I went from the amber/reddish dash, shifter etc. lighting to all green using led's and the gel cellaphane i am speaking of. Timmy is thinking of the hard colored plastic that is used on theatre stage lighting. What i speak of is pretty similar to what is used to give the speedo clusters color and is super thin and flexible like glad plastic wrap. It takes some experimentation with different color plastic and led bulbs...but it does work and is not dimmer.

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

^^^Ugh, dont get me going on the speedometer lighting, lol. I want it all blue in there but think that one is impossible. And I luv how the srt has the rings around the gauges, but isnt the mileage and compass setting thing still in green on them?

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

Im wondering if that colored film would work in that case, apply it right over the led board. That would be alot easier than soldering new components on.

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

I want to install an led behind the "Information Center" now. The letters are see thru just like the buttons are. Going to try and just tap in an extra led w/resistor behind it glued to the cuircut board. Might need two though to get the lighting even.
