Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

I have had decent luck swapping out the burnt heater control bulbs with leds, and also a burnt esp button bulb with an led bulbs. For the leds I bought them off ebay, they are 3mm and came with resistors needed to run at 12 volts. Dont ask what resistors they are because I have no idea, they all came shipped together from the ebay listing.

One of the burnt bulbs. The stock bulbs are NOT led.

LEDs and resistors I used, from off ebay.

LED and resistor being soldered together.

testing LED and resistor on a 9 volt battery to make sure it worked.

LEDs soldered on the board. Resistors I used heat shrink tube over them.

Rubber boot thing installed on the board with the LEDs thru them.

Test run of the first led I installed. To make sure it was soldered on the right way, have to make sure the + lead is on the correct side. If the LED works on the 9 volt battery but not soldered on the board then just switch it around on the board and resolder, should work then.

Blue LEDs installed in the heater control unit.

Blue LEDs installed in the esp button and other 4 buttons above the heater control unit. Pix blow, much better in person seeing it. See how much brighter those 4 buttons are with the leds in them compaired to the pic above with the stock bulbs in them.

Guess my cam sux taking pix at night. The new blue leds are awesome, no more stock green color. And they are 10x brighter than stock.

Nice writeup and will be helpful when the bulbs in my 07 eventually give out.

Thanks for the writeup. I'd love to swap out all my green bulbs for white ones (to match the instrument cluster lighting.) Now I know how to accomplish the task.

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

It now is really bright with the blue leds installed. Im still not used to it being so bright compaired to the stock dim green color, but it looks awesome and everyone so far that was in my Jeep commented how it looked without me even saying anything. I think its one of those things that if your lights work then your happy with it, but my heater control lights never worked and finally I replaced them after getting motivated seeing Hamze's work. I put blue leds in so I now want to change every light to the blue, I didnt plan on it at first but the blue leds match my stereo head unit perfect. I def think its worth doing, though it does take alot of time removing everything and soldering. If your not comfortable with soldering and with figuring things out yourself I wouldnt suggest messing with the bulbs, with one of the bulbs I took too much existing solder off and had a hell of a time getting the new led soldered on the board. I had to really heat up the contact point and prayed the led would sit right, which after a few tries and 30 min later I got it on correctly.

Like I said before in other posts, I have soldered a little bit before but I practiced alot on an old broken dvd player i had, removing parts and soldering them back on before I even attempted working on my car that I can really F up if not doing it right. Last thing I wanted was to melt the whole cuircut board and have to buy another one.

The bulbs are actually not green themselves, they are regular clear bulbs with a blue coating on them. If you scrape the blue coating off the bulbs then the buttons will be a bright orange color. I am not happy with the heater control because it is dimmer than the other buttons. Thats because there is a clear plastic thing that the light reflects off of to get the lighting all behind the knobs. With the buttons the lights/leds in my case, are directly behind the button so thats why they are so bright. And i could get away with the leds sticking up so much from the board. Guess you have to take everything apart to see exactly what im talking about, but i got everything working perfect with the pictures i posted.

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

Good mod. You and Hamze may get me motivated to do this.

Have you ventured to see if you can change the shifter bezel gear lights (PRND)?

I'm thinking either white or amber. I like amber whenever I see it in German cars. They say it's very easy on the eyes.

Re: Installed LEDs in Heater Control/Buttons

So I just ordered a set of the white 3mm LEDs to do this. You definitely lit the fire under my ass to finally get this done. Enough guessing how high the heater is turned up at night!

My question is how did you get the old burnt out lights off of the heater control unit?

And also how did you get everything off to get to that unit to take out the old bulbs?
