You sir, have hit the nail on the head. I've been in car audio for 7 years and its amazing how many people dont understand.
Putting a cap on your system is like putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. You are just masking the problem. If you're car can't effectivly power what its running now, wheres the cap get its power from when it has to recharge? Sure your lights dont dim, but its still putting a strain on your electrical system.
Back on topic, other things you could look at besides the ground at the amp, would be whats called "the big 3". Google will explain in much more detail what they are. Also, make sure you are using the proper gauge amp kit for the power you are running. Too many times i've seen people run too small of wires causing all sorts of issues. Once had a guy running a JL 1000/1 off a 10ga amp kit....i died a little inside that day.
