Jeep WK Sub Box ideas

I've upgraded the mids and highs in my WK and now I'm really missing out on the low end sound. I want to add a subwoofer setup to my stereo, but am trying to figure out the best way to go about it. My original plan was for a false floor, but don't know how I'm going to prevent rattling and really don't know how I'm going to fit a decent sounding sub into a depth that short.

The next option is based off of another install I've see on here with some slight changes. This is the one that I'm using for general dimensions:

Now I'm wanting to dress it up a bit without going over the top. I'm also up in the air on which sub I want to go with. As of right now, I have a JL 10w3 that wasn't too bad for low end fill in the trunk of my last car, but could probably use a bit more oomph. That could be with a port, a second sub, or a better sub. I've been eyeballing the old school aluminum cone Eclipse 12" subs because the sound amazing, but they're kind of hard to find and the really good ones are SUPER deep. Since I have the 10, I'm going to stick with that design for now.

This is what I've come up with so far:

I am thinking the second side will either be a second 10w3 or a slot port that's hidden. I'd like to find a way to incorporate some metal into the design, but would only have access to sheetmetal. A press fit grill would be great, maybe in chrome to look like a headlight, but also might be a little too much.

The grill in the middle would be removable, with green LED lighting up the inside of that area. Nothing is cut at this point, but looking for some thoughts on this idea.

Thanks!

Re: Jeep WK Sub Box ideas

That is awesome, great to see a good image of that... I have actually talked with a couple guys at work about something almost exactly the same, using the grill area for an amp rack. For myself though I regularly load up the pooch and lower the rear seats so it would just be too difficult to have something so large.

I hope you do it, I would love to see this to see some final fit and finish and to see if the complete project would actually pull off an understandable look and not just look like slots and subs.

Unfortunately the grille area won't be big enough for an amp, so it's more of just a decerative element at this point. May put the distro blocks in there, but don't want my ground wire that long if I can avoid it. I'm trying to limit the size too, it will be just about the same size as the first picture posted. To avoid the "slots" look I was hoping to integrate some metal, but will make all the edges pretty sharp looking. Mayb some fiberglass in there too? I dunno, that's why I'm hoping for some brutally honest opinions. Thanks for the reply, if any other thoughts hit ya, let me know!

Re: Jeep WK Sub Box ideas

Yeah, for myself I dont have a cover back there and prefer not to have it, nothing say "there is something valuable for you to break in and steal" like a cover over the rear cargo area, yes that view point is simply because I live in the ghetto. Anyway, I was thinking of making the box go up to the carpet/pleather seam on the back of the seat which would give more space for goodies in the grill, of course I still never measured anything out so it may still have not worked out.

furthermore, if you did a smooth face and maybe painted it your jeeps body color that may help to pull off the look over carpet (maybe you were already planning something similar).

Re: Jeep WK Sub Box ideas

I don’t have a cover either but was thinking about getting one, just for parking at the airport (Midway) or leaving it in a parking garage down town. Tint should be enough to keep out most lookers, but you really never know. I would like the idea of making the box that tall, but would prevent the option of using the cover. There is always the option of taking them out before going to the airport, or making a way for them to scoot up against the tailgate when leaving it parked, but that could get annoying depending on travel schedule. I could also bolt it down behind the seats or something too, but would prefer to have it free in case I wanted to fold down the seats and slide it all the way forward to move something big in the cargo area.

I was recently inspired by this thread I found online (google search “330 BMW Beryllium” –click first link) and want to really do it right. I can’t go to the extent that he did, but I may be able to bring in some routed edges, maybe some leather, can laser cut and powder coat sheet metal here at work. Would also like to bring in some green lighting just for the effect, maybe around the rings in addition to back lighting the grill. Even if the grill is protecting a box that’s 1” deep. I think that would have a great effect when it’s turned on.

In addition to the box, I was planning on building up the storage area in the middle (cutting it out and replacing it with a carpeted or leather amp rack) that could continue the green LED’s. Placing them under the amps so they have a green halo under them would be something different. A temperature controlled tiny actuator to open up the lid for venting might be a nice touch as well

Re: Jeep WK Sub Box ideas

So I got another idea that might class up the idea of having a subwoofer in an “adult” vehicle that I wanted to bounce off you guys.

I’m thinking an overall box with a face like the first picture I posted – totally flat. With that, router the edges and wrap the thing in leather matching vinyl with a small layer of quilt batting under it. On the front face, make a sheet metal grille like an old CJ that goes around both speaker cutouts and has the grille in the middle. Polish it to match the chrome trim, or go forward with the idea of painting all the trim the brushed titanium color and paint the rear grill to match. As for the cutouts on the grill, trying to keep the same ratio and radii of my current grill or the new WK2 grill to keep it as modern looking as possible. Here’s a shot of the grille:
