I haven't posted on here in awhile. I just installed this setup and thought I'd post it as a good bass option for the Jeep community. The system consists of a JL Audio CP208LG-W3v3 MicroSub and Kenwood eXcelon X500-1 Class D amplifier.
The install took me about 4 hours. It proved very simple having the rear floor removable with just two bolts and virtually everything else held in with clips. I mounted the amp strategically to isolate power and signal wired and have them cross, when necessary, at 90 degree angles to reduce the possibility of unwanted noise. Source comes from a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X595 headunit.
The Microsub uses a single 5-way binding post, and I used banana terminals for quick disconnect and box removal when needed. Despite a single connection, each 8w3v3 sits in their own airspace with individual ports. RMS handling is 500w @ 2 Ohms. JL makes a 250w single-driver version of this unit too.
The X500-1 is a simple, no frills Class D design in a space-saving chassis. It has 2x30A onboard fuses and is rated at 500W RMS @ 2Ohms. I considered going with a JL amplifier, but the comparable unit was $100 more and I am already using an eXcelon headunit.
First, let me say I was very skeptical about buying these subs without an audition. Our other vehicle has two 2011 Rockford P3's run off a Rockford T1000. We like to feel our music. Simply put, you need to hear these little 8's to believe them. The output is incredible given the size of the enclosure. Clarity and musicality put every other sub I've owned to shame (Alpine Type R, Image Dynamics IDQ, Rockford P3, Bravox UXP, Alumapro Alchemy MX). There is no hint of boomy resonance and the JL's blend very well crossed over at 100Hz/12db from the headunit. They play clean, solid and transient bass all the way down to frequencies very few songs incorporate. Cabin gain in the Jeep accentuates frequencies below 40hz, making these sound much larger than they are. Overall I am very pleased with how they are playing during break-in.
I have never owned JL products before, but am certainly impressed with this little box. Even at ~$500 I feel it is a phenomenal value. Great bass taking up very little space.
Thanks for looking! Sorry for the huge pics.
