Re: Kicker tweeter questions

IMO, I did the full Kicker upgrade and it's a HUGE difference over the BA setup. I bought it all at Just for Jeeps website. Sound is awesome and best of all it looks stock. You need to changeout the AMP to the Kicker AMP for overall improvement and full benefit of the speaker change. This improvement along with my Lockpick add-on was a great fit. I have the MyGig RER with Ipod connection so I can also select and control all my Ipod songs from the touchscreen of the RER.

With the add on audio cable of the Lockpick I also installed the top of the line DVD headrests from Power Acoustik. The new kicker AMP handles surround sound so movies sound awesome. Plus the way I wired the headrests I can either put a movie in the main deck which runs to both headrests as well of each headrest can play it's own movie.

I've had aftermarket systems and for $700 this upgrade is a steal. I would go for the whole thing. You won't be dissapointed. The bass out of the sub is pretty impressive plus it's a customized fit. Everything is hidden and cargo cover goes right over the sub locking into the child restraint latches on the fold down seat.

Re: Kicker tweeter questions

Both the BA and the Kicker OEM speakers are 2 ohms.

Imaging wise, the difference between the two (as reported by members of LXF, my wife and myself) seems to be this:

BA, overall, has a more muted tonality (some say "muddy").

Kicker, overall, has brighter imaging (some say "tinny").

Kicker is certainly rounded out with a subwoofer of any kind and the matching OEM cabin amp (whether it's the DSS upgrade, or the standard amp).

Mismatched BA speakers with Kicker amp, or the other way around, will yield unsatisfactory imaging, nearly every time.

I did a Kicker speaker upgrade and left the BA amp in the wife's Magnum and she hated it... I installed the OEM Kicker amp from my SRT8 Charger and she LOVES it! Same speakers, matching amp.

I upgraded my OEM Kicker cabin amp to the DSS amp and WOW, what a difference! Now the wife wants the DSS amp

LOL.

Just my .02, but from experience, it's best to match the amp and the speakers when doing an OEM swap.

Correct. That's why Kicker made the AMP to go with the speaker ensemble.

I have a good ear and yes the Kicker tweeters are a bit more "bright" than the BA's. Rightfully so they need to be with the added LFE the sub provides. The entire Kicker ensemble and AMP's work well together.

As a pointer be sure to adjust your EQ to lower the treble and bass cause if you didn't disconnect the battery terminal when doing the upgrade your system will have the sound setup with the original BA equipment which definitely won't sound right. You need to play and adjust the system according to your music and listening preferences.

I have the amp reset procedure around here, somewhere. When I dig it up, I'll post it. The Kicker upgrade amp is designed to be "Hot Swapped", that way the CALID is written to the amp and it knows what vehicle it's on.

If you DON'T hot swap it, you run the risk of omitting some of the cool features like the DSS and having some very flat imaging coming from that thing...

Re: Kicker tweeter questions

Here's the Kicker amp reset procedure. If you disconnect the battery when upgrading your amp, it will not read the network CALID and will only perform in default mode (virtually the same imaging as the old OEM amp).

Not to worry! Follow these instructions to get the most out of your upgraded Kicker amp:

With the key on, turn off the radio.
Turn the key to off position with the door closed.
Wait roughly 2 minutes to allow the system to go into sleep mode.
Turn the key to the on position (do not start vehicle) and wait roughly 2 minutes.
Turn the key back to the off position.

You'll be able to tell if this worked properly by turning the volume up two numbers then immediately down two notches. You will hear a brief mute, then a noticeable difference in sound quality. This is DSS mode. To get out of it, simply turn it up then down two clicks and it will briefly mute and reset to standard mode.

Hope this helps,
Bob
