License plate cam installs - advice needed :)

Hi all!

Got my 2011 Jeep Liberty Sport about 3 weeks ago and here I am already "hacking" it!

I just purchased a MyGig Lockpick V.4, two license plate cams, and a U-Connect mic from autotoys.com (they have the best prices I've found on these items BTW!)

I'm curious if anyone else has attempted to mount a license plate cam on a liberty (which is on the hatch) and feed the cable through the black "conduit" that's already there, and then on to the dash...?
Is it possible to feed the wires this way, or would it be too much of a hassle?
I'd rather not try and mount it on the bumper if I can avoid it (I figure I'd need to drill into my 3-week old for this)

I imagine the front license cam will be easier as I just need to get the wire through an existing grommet in the firewall...

Thanks everyone!

-Greg

Re: License plate cam installs - advice needed :)

I was wondering the same thing. When I did some looking i was thinking of going through the light bulb housing for the license plate and then up and out. Not sure it\f it would work or not. I hope someone can help you out with this.

Re: License plate cam installs - advice needed :)

Never done it on a 2011 liberty but i can tell you from experience, mounting on the hatch actually is my prefered method.

You'll be able to drill a hole behind the plate to run your wires into the doors, they;ll be a factory loom of sorts to follow and you can go right through the rubber boot into the cab.

Should be the path of least resistance so to speak.

Good luck.

Just remember, Measure/check twice and drill once when your checking for clearance behind the plate into the hatch.

Wow there identical. Only thing different is my lift .I plan on attempting this install as soon as I get done moving. with drilling behind the plate can water get in or do you seal it with silicone?

Re: License plate cam installs - advice needed :)

I'm sure some silicone sealant would do the trick, or maybe we can find a rubber grommet snug enough to make it waterproof...

I'm also thinking that maybe I will try drilling a hole in the black plastic molding aove the plate that contains the lights and latch and see if there's room in there to run the video cable where the power cables for the lights go into the hatch.

I'd feel better about drilling into something plastic that can be replaced as opposed to the hatch itself

I guess once we get the wire into the hatch, we just need to take the hatch panel off and get the wires through the rubber conduit at the top where all the other wires go.

Once it's into the ceiling, I have no clue about getting it all the way to the front...do we need to take the whole headliner off?

I ran my xm antenna all the way to the front. I just took off the top platic piece by the hatch and the fished it along the sided and it slid in with no problem I plan on doing the same thing with the camera wires.

Bingo! No need to remove the headliner.

When you ran your XM cable to the front, I assume you went down through the driver side A-Pillar and over to the radio?

Re: License plate cam installs - advice needed :)

OK, sorry for the Newbie question, but when you said you fished it along the side...did you mean you somehow tucked it up and around the headliner on the edge (it seems too tight to do this), or did you use a fishtape and just run it above the liner from the plastic panel you removed at the back to the front A-pillar in a straight shot?

Thanks again!
