Turn them off (fade all the way to the front) - tell me if you notice a difference. You barely hear any information from the rear speakers (as a person in the front seat). The rear speakers do nothing except pull the sound stage in the wrong direction, and give passengers something to hear . Think about it... imagine sitting at a concert and having sound come from behind you as well... it would sound like shit! Same principle is applied hear. Remember, music is recorded in 2.1 - stereo - left/right. Movies/surround sound is recorded in 5.1, 7.1, etc - that's when rear speakers become necessary.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Alright, well I've got the factory Boston Acoustic 3.5" dash speakers and 6"x9" woofers back in for some testing.

Currently running;

3.5":
500hz-20khz @ 12db/oct
6"x9": 80hz-400hz @ 12db/oct

Drivers have been phase tuned and level matched.

First thing I noticed was how efficient these drivers are. They get LOUD! Granted I have aftermarket power on them. The dash speaker could be a little 'cleaner' in the mid to upper treble, and a little 'thicker' in the 400-700hz pass band. Not a bad wide band driver though. I still prefer my Fostex FR88 The mid woofer seems to be a low inductance driver; it's very accurate with quick drum kicks. Could be a little cleaner throughout the pass band, but again, not a bad driver by any means.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Quick question Matt: how are you wiring the dash speakers (the Founteks)? I'm checking them out now and I see they are rated for 15W RMS, and are also 8Ohm. Just curious if you're sending from your amp (which I'm assuming is 4Ohm) or straight from your headunit... It sounds like a pretty awesome driver from what I've been reading and I'd like to figure out how to make it work.

I have an aftermarket amplifier powering them (100 watts per channel [4 channels], and a 500 watt sub woofer channel). The amplifier is stable down to 2 ohm on all channels, so anything above 2 ohm is fine. Because I'm using an 8 ohm driver, I'm not getting the same power I would get from using a 2 ohm driver; I'm getting less power. Maybe somewhere around 50 watts, frankly, I could care less. Amplifier power is the most overrated thing in car audio. My gains for the channels that power the Fostex FR88's aren't even 25% turned up. The more efficient a speaker is, the less power you'll need to achieve the same SPL with a less efficient speaker.

Here's where people get confused.... A typical 4-channel amplifier has power ratings for 2ohm and 4ohm. For example; 100w x 2 @ 2ohm, 50w x 2 @ 4ohm. But, that doesn't mean you can't use a 3 ohm speaker, or a 6 ohm speaker, or an 8 ohm speaker, or a 16 ohm speaker, etc. It just means that this is roughly the power the amplifier will do at those specific ohm loads.

People also are misled by power ratings. I could pair a 15w RMS speaker with a 1,000w amplifier just fine. The gain knob allows me to adjust how much power is being delivered to the speaker. Some folks believe that if I wire a sub woofer to a 1,000w amplifier that the woofer will be delivered 1,000w at all times, wrong. Music is dynamic.

If people spent more time on proper install and spent more money on good processing, as opposed to more time on worrying if they should have purchased a 1,000w amp instead of the 800w amp, and less money on 'name brand' speakers (which are just re-badged OEM speakers - Alpine, JL, etc ), they'd be more satisfied.

The FR88 is an awesome wide-band driver, especially in the factory dash location. I've had stellar results with it, but I'm also using aftermarket power and some serious processing.
