Amplifier power is the most overrated thing in car audio. My gains for the channels that power the Fostex FR88's aren't even 25% turned up. The more efficient a speaker is, the less power you'll need to achieve the same SPL with a less efficient speaker.

Here's where people get confused.... A typical 4-channel amplifier has power ratings for 2ohm and 4ohm. For example; 100w x 2 @ 2ohm, 50w x 2 @ 4ohm. But, that doesn't mean you can't use a 3 ohm speaker, or a 6 ohm speaker, or an 8 ohm speaker, or a 16 ohm speaker, etc. It just means that this is roughly the power the amplifier will do at those specific ohm loads.

People also are misled by power ratings. I could pair a 15w RMS speaker with a 1,000w amplifier just fine. The gain knob allows me to adjust how much power is being delivered to the speaker. Some folks believe that if I wire a sub woofer to a 1,000w amplifier that the woofer will be delivered 1,000w at all times, wrong. Music is dynamic.

If people spent more time on proper install and spent more money on good processing, as opposed to more time on worrying if they should have purchased a 1,000w amp instead of the 800w amp, and less money on 'name brand' speakers (which are just re-badged OEM speakers - Alpine, JL, etc ), they'd be more satisfied.

The FR88 is an awesome wide-band driver, especially in the factory dash location. I've had stellar results with it, but I'm also using aftermarket power and some serious processing.
Good shit man, thanks. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on the JAMOs as well, because those caught my eye at the buyout price on PE.

I am too! Unfortunately, I won't be able to give them a shot soon. I'll be out of town for the next 10 days or so. The buyout price was too good to pass up, especially given Zaphs review and the compatible t/s parameters.

Maybe, just maybe, I can find time to get them in tonight, but I doubt it.

haha

Nothing really, I've just been tinkering with different speakers, doing some testing. The last 'major' thing I did was the fiberglass enclosure. I had to take it out for access to the amp, so I put the old 10" enclosure back in, lol. I'm going to make some changes to the fiberglass enclosure, it sticks out way to far - my goal was to have it look factory, I deviated from that, lol.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Ok, enough with the factory Boston Speakers, lol. I didn't remember how bad they sucked until I put them back in (recently).

Sometime in the near future (hopefully the next couple days), I'm going to permanently mount my 3" Fountek FR88's in the dash location and try out the JAMO 6.5" woofers in the doors.

I'm also thinking about adding a second, 2 channel amplifier to power the rear door speakers. The amplifier would be on a switch so I could turn it on when I have passengers in the rear. Would be a fun little project.

I've also got to do something about the sub woofer dilemma. Currently I have my Kicker 10" CVR and enclosure in there so I can have easy access to the amplifier. So I will be game planning a new approach in the near future.

LOL. They are great compared to other factory stereos, but fall way short compared to the low cost raw drivers I have sitting on my bedroom floor.
