Inverted... none really. It sounds the same. Sometimes guys will do it to A) show off the basket/magnet B) gain more volume by not having the displacement of the magnet in the enclosure. A potential consequence is you may hear mechanical noise .

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Thanks for the info. So I guess it's best to build a good old wood enclosure... Unless you're going for custom look or something...

Yup. Use a dense wood 3/4"-1". MDF is most popular because it's a chaep dense wood. Others use trupan, birch. Birch is nice because it is dense, has a grain (good for using t-nuts) and is lightweight compared to MDF. Trupan is essentially a lighter version of MDF.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Alright, I kicked it in an extra gear last night and got the whole stereo in!

Pics!

Junk factory battery terminals

New terminals with set screws. s much easier to work with. No more ring connectors with the factory crap.

Here you can see the whole run of the 4 gauge power wire and the continuous wire for the 9887.

Constructed the temp 3" enclosures first, so they could have time to cure/dry.

6.5" conversion baffles I previously used when I had the ID OEMS. The cutout had to be widened just a little to accommodate the SLS's.

Used the factory rain guard.

Baffle bolted to the door, door deadened.

Monsters in place.

Temp enclosures in place.

Took me about 4 hours to get all of this done. I then spent another 45 minutes to an hour tuning. I'm probably about 60% done with tuning, though the first 80% is relatively quick. The last 20% of tuning can takes weeks, so that sucks haha.

Initial impressions:

Alpine 9887 - love the deck so far! iPod playback is very nice, controls are well designed, I love the biolite display. Only gripe is 3 things I had on my 880 that I no longer have: no muting of channels from the deck (makes tuning SO much easier), no swapping phase of the drivers right from the deck (makes tuning SO much easier), no independant left and right EQ. I knew all this stuff going in, but I needed a deck that had a low high channel crossover point and the 880 or 800 doesn not.

Tang Band W3-1364sa 3" - Wow! A great little driver that can play nice and low. I'm very impressed with it clarity, especially in the upper treble as this is where a traditional tweeter would play (and play well). There guys have no problem playing all the way up to 20khz. I have them about 35 degrees off axis.

Peerless SLS 6.5" - Wow Wow Wow! I need to go back a add about twice as much deadener as I currently have. They're almost equvalent to my 10" sub I had in there before. With just the 6.5's powered (no sub, no 3"'s) I had a ton of stuff rattling in the car - not just the doors! These things are beasts! I was flipping through my iPod and Kid Cudi - Day 'N Nite came on, I thought my chest was going to puncture, lol - with just the SLS's playing!

Diamond D6 12" - Fantastic sub woofer! Blends extremely well with the front stage, good sound characteristics, gets waayyy loud.

I'll get some more seat time today and report back any new opinions.

To come next will be the RCA's, and then the fiberglass 3" pods, the the fiberglass sub enclosure. stay tuned.

Oh crossover points are

High HPF: 400hz
Mid LPF: 315hz
Mid HPF: 80hz
Low LPF: 63hz

All at 18db/oct.

Can't remember my time alignment numbers or level adjustments.

Nope. I trimmed off the old ones, trimmed some of the heat shrink away and slipped them right in the cavities. Quick, simple, clean, and now not a pain in the ass to remove or add wiring or remove the negative terminal.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Thanks Fredo!

I did a little more tuning today (and finally got to work with the PEQ), made some big strides! I have concluded that I am going to aim the W3's on-axis when I build the fiberglass pods.

Are you running your system off of another battery? Do you use a cap?

Nope, stock electrical system.

Just FYI, capacitors are bad for your electrical system. Think of them as a band-aid for a gun shot would. They actually tax your electrical system.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Got a link to the terminals you used?

Any plans to use the Imprint tuning ever, or are you satisfied with your abilities? Also any tips for installing the 9887 or was it just the RCA's giving the problem
