Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Update:

Alright, clearly I decided to go with a 1/2" MDF base. I figured it would be easier to incorporate the mounting bolts (and line them up) with no walls or obstruction (like an entire enclosure). Happy with my decision, lol.

What a pain in the ass this was, lol. I started with blue painters tape... yeah, that shit fell right off. I read that duck tape was a better mold release anyways, so I decided to use that. Worked perfectly. I went vertical and horizontal - felt enough was protected.

Went crazy with the drop cloth.

You'll notice a little bulge - more on that later, lol.

Work station.

Here's a comparison of the Knytex 1708 biaxial stiched cloth/mat (17oz) and the 3/4oz chopped mat.

As you can see I folded the Knytex over so you could see that on side of it is chopped mat and the otehr side of it is a cloth. It is stiched together. This shit is VERY nice stuff. Heavy duty. What would take 13-15 layers of 3/4oz chopped mat, this does in 1 layer!

Gearing up

Glassing begins. You can see my first point of attack was meshing the wood with the actual mold area. Also meshing the two pieces of wood.

3/4 oz chopped mat used here.

I pre-cut a large section of Knytex 1708 biaxial stitched cloth/mat (17oz) and glassed on the wheel well hump.

Another pre-cut portion of the 1708 here.

Clearly the medium sized coverall was a bit small, LOL

You can see strands of glass sticks to my gloves... I was wearing sets of gloves. Dispose of one layer after it becomes a nuisance. Fresh layer underneath.

I continued upward with the 3/4 oz chopped mat. The Knytex is too heavy to stick to the vertical and upside down portions of the mold area. This will come once the mold is pulled and I can work on it outside of the car.

Taking a break now. Letting it cure for a bit, then I'll go back and add a few more layers of chopped mat. It will then cure over night.

I'm still not sure how I'm going to position the mounting ring (straight, angled, etc)... fawking 7" mounting depth sucks, lol.

oh yeah, haha, I meant to talk about that after the pics.

After all the searching I did I never came across a good way to implement banana plugs. Since I want all of the wiring to be hidden, I figured a recessed cup-like cubby would be a great way to do that - mounting the actuall banana jacks on the inside wall. I walked around the house looking for a 2"x2" square item with no luck. I then looked in the garage and decided to use the cap off a spray can. Voila, I've got a cup (hopefully), lol.

It's right by the little vent area on that pannel. So I'll just run my wiring through that vent, and plus them right into the back of the enclosure. No wires showing.

I'll tell ya, the prep work took longer than actually mixing the resin and laying the glass.

Probably 2 hours of prep work. Sucked, lol.

No, nothing was removed.

It went, duck tape panel (heavily), bolt down wood, tape plastic drop cloth around the area.

The duck tape was the worst. That took over an hour.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Well, that's it for the night.

Did another layer of 3/4oz and then finished the layer of Knytex 1708.

So, around 2-4 layers of 3/4oz chopped strand mat and 1 layer of 17oz Knytex. I'll let it sit overnight, cure, and not run the risk of pulling the mold to early and risking any warping.

Tomorrow, I'll pull the mold, get some bracing layed, trim the edges, and hopefully get the mounting ring set. Not a whole lot of time to work on it tomorrow, so I doubt I'll get a chance to lay any glass on the fleece. We'll see.

Nothing hard about it so far. Seems like this would be the most difficult part, so it should be smooth sailing from here on out.
