Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

Got tired of the factory receiver, passive processing, and low-grade speakers... time for a change!

Equipment List

Processing/transport
  • Alpine CDA-9887
High Range
  • Tang Band W3-1364SA bamboo cone 3"
Mid Woofer
  • Peerless 830946 SLS 6.5"
Sub Woofer
  • Diamond Audio D6 12"
Amplification
  • Kicker KX700.5 5-channel amplifier
Wiring
  • KnuKonceptz (power/ground wire)
  • Kicker (speaker wire)
  • Parts Express (battery terminals)
  • Monster Cable I-306 (RCA interconnects)
Sound Deadener
  • Second Skim Damplifier Pro

The 9887 will be installed using the factory navigation bezel and accompanying dash kit. I previously had the dash kit with the little "wings" on the sides and it looked quite awful.

The Tang Band's will be installed in temporary .02 ft^3 enclosures to nail down axis points. Once that has been accounted for they will be fiber glassed into the corners of the dash.

The SLS's will be installed in an already heavily dampened door, but I'm pretty sure I'll need to attack it with more deadener as these mid woofer are beefy as hell.

The Diamond D6 will be mounted in a temporary 1.2 ft^3 sealed enclosure while I construct a fiber glass enclosure for the passenger side rear quarter panel.

The 700.5 amplifier will remain mounted in the factory cargo storage area beneath the floor.

Starting crossover points (@ 1db/oct slopes)

High: HPF = 500hz
Mid: LPF = 315hz
Mid: HPF = 80hz
Low: LPF = 63hz

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

I'll be installing equipment as it is delivered.

I received the 9887 and the D6, so they were installed today. Still waiting for the mid and high range drivers to arrive, as well as some other install equipment. Also waiting for my fiberglass supplies to arrive.

**Just FYI, I didn't mount the trim ring around the receiver yet. It doesn't quite sit flush because of the large RCA's that are currently being used, so I will be ordering some new slim RCA's to take care of this issue.

Here are some pics from today's progress.

Re: Matt's 2006 WK Stereo Build Log Part II

I also started on the mounting system for the fiberglass sub woofer enclosure.

Whenever I install anything I always like it to be 100% reversible back to factory... this concept will be carried out throughout this install.

Instead of drilling into the quarter panel to mount the enclosure (as the JL Stealthbox requires ) I decided to utilize the factory tie downs as my floor-based mounting locations. I decided to get this done today as I am also using the rear one as my mount for the temporary enclosure.

It's quite simple really. 10-32 T-nuts, gorilla glued on top of the t-nut, 10-32 2" long thump bolts. Rubber washers for inside of the ensloure to maintain a tight seal.

I did have to Dremel away some of the plastic for the rear mount.

Here are some pics.

Progress to continue as equpment arrives. Stay tuned.

Thanks Chris!

I'm going to take my time with the sub enclosure... I want it to be absolutely flawless when I'm done, so don't expect it to be built by next week Same with the 3" dash enclosures.

LOL. If I wasn't so busy with work, I could get it completed pretty quickly, but we're pretty busy right now and it doesn't help that a co-worker was in a car accident and I'm having to pick up the slack until he's better.

I'm actually planning on doing the dash pods before I do the sub woofer enclosure. I can live with the temporary sub enclsorue for a little bit, but not ugly PVC dash pods. Plus, the pods will not need too much glass work, so this will be a nice project before getting into the sub enclosure.

I've got a couple different approaches/ideas floating around in my head... I'll get something more concrete when I really sit down and explore the area around the pillars/dash area.

No. I'm going to hang onto it just in case I want to revert back to it. Doubt it, but ya never know.
