First of all.....Im not telling him he HAS to buy a bassworx box....I'd rather nate buy a NICE box if hes going to get a stereo. if hes going to BUILD custom, Id rather nate do something big, kind of what I did.

I know my boy Nate, hes a perfectionist. therefore, my suggestions to him are to get a NICE box or build a NICE CUSTOM setup..

thanks for your opinion though, I guess I know nothing about stereos.....

Re: Nasty Nate's Stereo build...

Thanks Paul!!! Yeah Matt knows his sh*t and hooked me up. I just have to do all the adjustments after to have it all tuned right.

like this... (Posted by Matt in this thread http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=2075 )

Quote:
Originally Posted by Matt View Post

Directions:

Car/stereo off - everything 100% installed/connected
  • Turn the remote bass knob gain all the way up
  • Turn gain on amplifier all the way down
  • Be sure all the settings on the radio are flat (bass/mid/treb set to 0)
  • Turn the bass boost to 0
  • Set the subsonic filter to ~25hz
  • Set the low-pass crossover to ~60-80hz, don't go higher than 100hz. Between 60 and 80 should be ideal.
Now, turn the car/stereo on
  • Put a familiar CD with a decent amount of low hz (bass) activity... most likely rap.
  • Turn the radio volume up as high as you usually go (take it to the point where the factory speakers start to show signs of stress or fatigue)
  • Now turn the volume down a few units... remember this # as once you are done setting your amplifier gain you will never want to take the volume past this #.
  • With your stereo blasting, your bass knob turned to its max, go to the amplifier and slowly turn the gain up... continue to turn it up until the sub seems to be stressed or to the point of distortion.
  • Now come back slightly on the gain and keep the gain there. Keep in mind your gain on the amp may barely be cracked, that's fine (and preferred).
  • Pop in some more test CD's that stress heavily on bass... if there are any points where the sub seems to bottom out or distort, go back and turn the gain down slightly.
Now, everything on the amplifier is set except for the phase. Phase adjustment is equivalent to switching the positive and negative wires for the sub at the amplifier (obviously you'll use the switch on the amp). Play around with this... this will essentially change when the sub will "hit" by milliseconds. Try it at "0" and "180" (180 = reverse phase). One will sound better than the other (for me, my phase is reversed on my sub).

Now that your amp setup is 100% complete, you can go back to the radio and make bass/mid/treb adjustments as you see fit. Don't go crazy with the bass setting though, mine is set to 0 and that is plenty, I'm sure you'll find the same. Try this;

Bass: 0
Mid: -2
Treb: +3

Balance: right 2 units
Fade: front 2 units

That should sound pretty good, but again, it's what sounds best to you that matters.

Also, since you set your gains with the knob all the way up, you won't risk sending a clipped signal to your sub if you decide to crank the bass via the bass knob.

After that you should be all set... happy listening!!

Re: Nasty Nate's Stereo build...

Holy god, there is a lot of false information in this thread.

Replying per Nate’s request.

First and foremost, $40 worth of wood is all anyone would need to make the “perfect” sounding enclosure for any subwoofer… so it’s just plain silly to equate price to performance in this case.

“Better built box”…? The enclosure Nate purchased is constructed with ¾” MDF… what is your enclosure constructed with? ¾” MDF is the industry standard, it’s what damn near every person uses to construct an enclosure.

Why would you suggest a larger enclosure?

Are you aware that the ideal enclosure size for this particular woofer, in a sealed alignment, is between .8-1.2 ft^3…? Nate will be right in the center of that after displacement.

Are you also aware that as you INCREASE enclosure size, you DECREASE power handling…?

Here are some plots below.

The first is a 12” CVX in a .8ft^3 sealed enclosure

Then we have a 12” CVX in a 1ft^3 sealed enclosure

Then we have a 12” CVX in a 2ft^3 sealed enclosure

You guessed it! The larger enclosure you go, the worse the plot.

According to your logic, you are suggesting that all 10” woofers sound alike, all 12” woofers sound alike, and all 15” woofers sound alike. This obviously isn’t true. One 8” woofer can be louder than two 12” woofers, one 15” woofer can be louder than two 10” woofers, and so on.

How loud something sounds has many variables; Power, enclosure, vehicle, cone area, xmax, etc, etc, etc.

I hate to bust your balls Kyle, but you’re giving Nate bad information. It’s quite alright to answers somebody’s questions with “I don’t know.” People would much prefer that over feeding somebody incorrect information. You are only hurting them, not helping.

All I know is the Jeeps acoustics make the sound, turn any sub up pushing decent power in a PORTED box (thats key in these Jeeps) and it'll bump loud and clean pending you get decent sub. Again got my Type R for like $100 $ and its loud and clean, Jeeps rear hatch makes the sound though. I listen to all types of music, lot of hip-hop and honestly for $ it cant be beat, its no audiopihle setup but who needs that? I dont have that kinda $ to burn anyway. Nate your box will be fine, Id see if you can port it though, talk to someone about the measurements there, pending on how you cut it, changes the sound wave so something to look into
What you’re describing is vehicle transfer function (or cabin gain as it’s often referred as).

Check out this graph below.

And actually, cabin gain is much higher in smaller cars, as opposed to larger SUV’s.
