Hi there !
I also wrote a small experience report, but I cannot upload photos, so here it is without them:
It took some time but finally it’s here. The Customtronix RAX Jailbreaker, (formerly known as RAX Lock Pick).
As you already can see in the videos, it’s nearly completely done in software. The cable only has the function to provide the missing connections, because the UConnect 8.4 is capable of much more than the things that are currently activated in the RAM, e.g...
I only tested he small version of the cable, that just has the additional video inputs as well as the additional aux inputs, which are looped into the system. There will also be another version of the cable with additional connectors for the cd or bluray player.
The installation is pretty easy. Just pull the original cable off the UConnect and put the new one in between. Then install your video and audio source and you are done.
Now it’s up to the software. CTX will offer several modules, which can be installed separately or in parallel.
Front Camera
If you are installing this module, one of the video inputs is used for a front camera. The functionality is comparable to the factory equipped rear camera. As soon as you are switching the gears to “D”, the front camera will turn on. At about 7 or 8 mph it will automatically switch off. Also shifting from “D” to “R” or vice versa works fine. You will automatically see the corresponding camera view.
Cargo Camera
This module installs the so called cargo camera. The software uses the second video source for that. It does not interfere with the front camera; both inputs can be used separately of each other. The cargo camera is controlled by the "Controls" menu, there you will find a new button called “Cargo Camera”.
CTX will also offer a kit with a camera equipped breaking light. So you can have a look at your cargo at any time you want. The camera is always switched on, also while driving and at all speeds. So, if you want, you can also use this input for your personal video entertainment system as I did. Instead of a camera I connected a digital television receiver to this input. Sound will be played using the AUX input, which is looped in at the Jailbreaker cable as well. So you don’t have to use the plug inside the center console.
DAB
DAB is an additional option, but is only of interest for European users. (Digital Radio, comparable to you HD radio)
SRT
Yes, you wanna have some fun?
There is no SRT version of the recent RAM yet, but the SRT app nevertheless is an interesting gimmick. So for all of you not having an SRT, the Jailbreaker will also make this app available.
Unlock
Already tried to pair your mobile phone while driving? Or wanna play with your VES while the car is in motion? The Jailbreaker will unlock all functionality, which is normally blocked while driving. Chrysler already unlocked navigation address input in the recent update, but Customtronix will set free the rest of the functions for you.
Chrysler-OEM-CD
Maybe some of you did not order the CD player by factory and do now regret this? If you order the RAX CD package, you will get the original Chrysler CD player in a nice case for installation in the center console. The Jailbreaker cable will have the additional connections, so it’s just plug-and-play. The player will be controlled the same way, as if you had ordered it by factory. All is working as expected and designed by Chrysler. It completely integrates into the vehicles CAN bus system.
Additional extras
All cameras can be switched on while driving. Just activate the cargo camera using the control menu. Then you can change the view using the “back” button from cargo to back to front and to cargo again. The cameras are already active if vehicle is in “ACC” mode, so you can watch TV while you are waiting for your wife without having the car running at this time :-D But there is one exception of the rule: the rear camera is only active in RUN mode and only until about 15mph. After that the build in bus system of the RAM disables the camera automatically. But that’s the same for all lockpick solutions; it’s not a bug in this version.
What’s coming next…
The guys are full of ideas. At the moment the first tests with the Chrysler BluRay player are running. There are several different packages you can purchase, just have a look at their shop (see links below). The software installation is totally simple. I did several tests, installed and uninstalled features and different firmware versions. All fine, no problems. I really can recommend this product. Just finding a good stable but inconspicuous location for the front camera is a little tricky.
