No bass from mids/sub

(WK Boston Acoustics)

Tonight I noticed out of the blue that I'm only getting sound from my tweaters in the dash. I have a sub hooked up to the rear speakers via a line-output converter and I'm getting no sound in the doors and no bass from my sub... so I'm wondering if my boston acoustics amp is shot.. I checked the fuse on the battery wire. Good. I checked the sub amp to see if it was getting power. It is. So I would guess that I'm having issues with my factory amp.. anyone have any insight or any ideas on where to start. The help is greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, best suggestion I can think of at the moment is to see if another local member is willing to swap BA amps to be sure that that's the issue.

Re: No bass from mids/sub

I can only tell you what happened to me a while back.

When I got my Jeep in April of 08' I found out that the rear speakers weren't working but the Tweeters and the Front Speakers were working. I thought the speakers were blown so I bought new speakers and installed them. That didn't resolve it so I found a new Infinity Amp on eBay and when I installed the Amp the rear speakers worked. So I'm saying there's a possible chance it's the Amp.

Re: No bass from mids/sub

It's hard to blame anything other than the amp.

The receiver sends out a full range signal to the amplifier. so, if it was an issue with the signal, then the rear speakers would still be reproducing higher frequencies (because the dash speakers are still functioning).

And, there is no way 4 speakers became dysfunctional at the exact same moment.

Only other explanation is the amplifier (or the associated wiring). I don't even think it's possible, but maybe part of the outgoing signal clip from the amp became partially disconnected. Doubt it though - I think it's either fully engaged or not at all.

Re: No bass from mids/sub

My rear Channels were blown that's why mine didn't work.

When I adjust the fade (front/back) I get sound from my tweaters but when I move it to the rear I hear this clicking as it adjusts and the sound disappears.

Agreed.

"fully engaged or not at all" <-- Are you talking about the clip being connected of the amp itself?

Excuse me for sounding dumb but it's still possible for only 2 out of my seven (including sub) speakers to work if the amp is busted? Could it possibly be from all the rain that I've been getting here? Maybe some water got in thre somehow? And when I turn the bass knob I get nothing... Thanks for the replies..

Re: No bass from mids/sub

Yeah, I meant the clip could have somehoe come partially disconnected from the amp itself, but that is a huge longshot, and I'm not even sure if it's physically possible to have it partially disconnected.

Yes. Some of the channels could have blown, and the others (two tweeter channels) could still be intact. This is what I believe happened.

And since your LOC is connected to the rear speaker output, and you aren't getting any output from the amp on that channel, you aren't getting a signal sent to your amp - therefor it will turn, just have nothing to play.

I guess it's possible. I'd pull back the panel and see if you see any sign of water in or near the amplifier. Either way, it sounds like it's toast.

Re: No bass from mids/sub

Easiest way to diagnose a problem like that is with a voltmeter. Go to the amp and measure the input from the stereo, output from the amp, output at the speaker connections, etc. I installed my whole stereo using a voltmeter, as I was installing the wires I would check to make sure everything is working properly and getting signals. When my drivers side tweeter stopped working i hooked it to my voltmeter and it instantly told me it was blown and time to buy a new one, instead of just guessing.

Oh, to tell if a speaker is blown I hooked it to my digital voltmeter and looked at the ohms, if its blown it will show up zero, if its good the ohms will keep going up and up.

Re: No bass from mids/sub

Thanks I used one on the fuse box today but I only got as far as that. I sourced an amp so I'm going to try that and go from there... I heard that if one speaker blows the amp goes into "protection mode" and cuts off the rest of the power. I wonder if the BA amp does the same thing.

I've never heard of an aftermarket amp having the capability to sense a blown speaker. Where did you hear that?

Still wouldn't explain why 2 channels still work on your amp either.
