Non ipod user

So I'm looking for a new head unit for my jeep and I'm curious if anyone out there uses anything BUT an ipod. I would like to find a head unit that lets me use my Android phone or my Zune. I really don't want to buy an ipod just so I can have my stash of tunes with me in the jeep.

Any guru's offer some help? Thanks

Re: Non ipod user

I was struggling with this problem a few years ago, not sure if any new products are available these days but here is what I learned: Ipod vehicle integration into aftermarket units took forever, and microsoft being less popular is taking even longer. Most USB compatible head units do not support zune, I've heard of certain units that will but it's hit or miss, I'll look around. An AUX input is your best bet. Get a good AUX cable and sound quality will be almost identical to USB through average systems. But unlike USB controls, you will have to control music through your player, not your stereo. If you hate that idea, get a USB capable unit and load up a thumb drive with whatever you want, you will just have to organize the folders by artist or song or whatever but you will be able to navigate menu's through the deck at least.

I guess what I'm saying is, you should find a cheap used ipod because unfortunately that is the best option with aftermarket decks.

Funny you should mention that. That was what I was thinking as a back up. Any suggestions on good HU's with front USB inputs? I've been searching Crutchfield and reading reviews but nothing has caught my eye yet.

Re: Non ipod user

i had the older version of this unit for a couple years. apparently it was just discontinued but the usb cable was long enough that I just mounted it in the glovebox. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-LJwXUFY...-KDC-X794.html

I'm not a fan of complicated looking decks, the excelon's have good specs and seem to avoid the boy racer look. I've upgraded to a kenwood touch-nav, it's been great.

Anyways some of the Alpine's have a front usb, can't go wrong there either http://www.crutchfield.com/s_500CDE103B/Alpine-CDE-103BT.html?tp=5684&nvpair=FFBrand|Alpine

Re: Non ipod user

Last I checked Kenwood had a metric eff-ton of front USB input headunits. I even had a DD Kenwood with a USB input. Worked fine for me. As for Zune and Android integrations, youre SOL. There is no natively supported Android units. What you could do is simply get a unit that allows ad2p (i think thats what its called) which is basically transmitting music from your cell phone via bluetooth. Apline and Pioneer units do this I know for a fact.

Re: Non ipod user

I've seen a couple nice Kenwoods and Alpines with the USB port up front so I think I'll end up going that route. Guess it won't be too bad that way. One less device to charge. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Non ipod user

Another quick question I have is when I purchase a new HU, is there a harness I need to make everything easier? Or am I looking at splicing and the like?

Re: Non ipod user

Oh yea there are a few harnesses. just check out http://www.crutchfield.com/
or http://www.sonicelectronix.com/
either one of these places will set you up with the correct harness.
sonic is a bit cheaper and you can get a good deal on a HU also.
