Looking for some sound advice. MY 05 WK has the BA speakers... Is this enough proof that I have premium sound? I don't want to remove the rear trim and find the amp if I do not really need too.
On a side note... Assuming a do have the factory amp, is the kicker amp upgrade worth while? or should I go completely aftermarket and install two new amps one for my subs and one for my speakers?
Yes, the Boston speakers only came with the premium sound (i.e. factory amplifier).
In my opinion, the Mopar/Kicker upgrade is not worth the money. Better equipment can be had for the same money spent. The only advantage there is with the Mopar/Kicker upgrade is that the speakers will clip into the existing speaker clips and the speaker amplifier will clip directly into the existing factory amplifier clips. The Mopar/kicker sub woofer amplifier will still require a power wire run from the battery to the rear quarter panel.
If you are willing to snip the speaker wire clips and add male/female connectors and run RCA's/power from the front of the Jeep to the rear, then I say take that money and go with better equipment. Check out some of the links in my sig... I replaced all six speakers, amplifier, and added a sub woofer for far less than what the Mopar/Kicker upgrade cost and I got better equipment.
Thanks for the quick advice Matt. As of right now I will definitely be going completely aftermarket. It makes the most sense to go that route and stay away from the prepackaged mopar / kicker combos. Especially since to add a kicker sub, you will be running the power wire anyway.
Ya if your gonna upgrade the speakers alpine type s are in my opinion (matt chime in if you feel different) are awesome speakers and reasonably priced if you look on ebay they bump and sound awesome
I upgraded my premium system in my 05 wk. I did components all around, Type R's in the front and Kicker's in the rear. I made a fiberglass sub enclosure in the wheel well on the passenger side, and used the extra cargo area for my 2 amps, a 4 channel kicker and a mono kicker. I decided to keep the factory headunit for now, because it has nav. and a 6 disk changer. If you decide to do like i did w/ the factory HU and aftermarket amps, make sure you add the rca convertor AFTER the factory amp in the rear quarter. or else you wont get any sound. The output of the factory HU is next to nothing, just enought to give the factory amp a signal and isnt enough to put anything through rca's.
If you want performance, clarity, quality, and worth the money.......................go with Hertz. Ultimate sound perfection, but a little pricey, but omg, you will be heard.
i heard hertz was good... but so expensive.. I already had most of the stuff from my other cars, so if i ever redo my entire system i'm going to go with some high quality stuff like hertz
To be honest there are many things that go into making a car stereo sound good.
The big ones (in specific order);
*Installation [proper per the driver(s)]
*Processing
*Equipment
I see it all the time, guys think they can buy up the nicest gear the world has to offer and then they pair it with a crap installation or shit processing and they may not even know how bad (or how much better) their stereo could be. Ya know in real estate, location, location, location, well in car audio (if sound quality is the true goal) it's installation, installation, installation. I've seen people spend more money on installation equipment the actual speakers. A speaker is only as good as the home you put it in. Most will refuse to believe or refuse to spend a little on installation material because it is not the "sexy" pick (like a nice component set). But it makes all the difference in the world!
Yea, so basically what Matt said, buy some good gear and install it/ have it installed good. Lol. I went overboard with my stereo in my WK, and if I were to do it all over again i'd prob keep the stock head unit, only buy a good set of componants for the fronts, a good 10" or 12" sub, and an amp/amps to run everything. Speaker brands are all subjective I realize so I wont even get into brands to get since everyone has different recommendations. The only thing I will recommend is check on ebay since I happen to find crazy cheap deals on brand new stereo gear on there, that and tweeter going out of business so I got things like my RCA's and dual amp wiring kit for 75% off also..
