Re: Speaker Brand Suggestions

Out of the list, I'd go with the Focals, ID's, Hertz, or JL's. I've heard all of them and they all sounded good given the right amount of power and the system overall was tuned correctly.

+1 to getting proper power and quality front door, rear door, and sub setup for car audio. We went to the PITA trouble of getting the satellite front dash and rear pillar small speaks wired into the above new setup and they just become sonic non-factors.

The Focals are spectacular, even at entry level. Definitely go components front door.

Enjoy.

Re: Speaker Brand Suggestions

Hey, saw this was bumped, completely forgot to post results and final decisions. Ive had m system done for a few weeks now, jeep has been just sitting for while being as I cracked my lower control arm on the drivers side. Haven't had much time to play it BUT I can say that it sounds amazing from the few times Ive pushed it!

All comes down to the QUALITY OF INSTALL and the QUALITY OF THE COMPONENTS being used imho. This is my 3rd system in my Jeep and Ive also dealt with many others and I have to say this is the best Ive ever heard in ANY car Ive been in. Here little list of what's being used, Ill also give some details below on install choices etc etc

Equipment:
Head-unit - Eclipse AVN726E (last model they made) thing is awesome SQ wise
Front Doors: Hertz Hi-Energy 165's (2 way components - not the XL's which just handle more power)
Rear Doors: MB Quart PVI 216's (2 way components)
Sub - JL 12W3v3 (2 ohm sub)
Amps - JL 450/4 (doors) - Alpine M Series Mono-Class D @ 500 watts RMS (sub)
Wiring - All Stinger/Kicker Signal Cables

All in all, the sounds as I said is AMAZING and Ive had many compliments form people who are big in sound so I know it has to be decent haha.

The Hertz speakers are the deal maker, those things are some of the BEST all around speakers Ive heard. The tweeter is silk dome so not too harsh and the clarity at high volumes is insane! The woofer is awesome, not lacking on the low end and plays all the frequencies brilliantly, not complaints what soever regarding those.

The MB Quarts are also awesome BUT the tweet is a little harsh and had to be turned back. They're known for that, I mean the tweet is a 1" metal dome so go figure haha. All in all they sound awesome as well as you'd expect form them, quality is still high!

The JL/Alpine amps are also awesome as you'd expect. The names speak for themselves but all in all I wanted name brand amps that wouldn't completely break the bank, not a Zapco amp but not too far from it imo.

Figured since I had pretty good stuff why skimp on signal so I got stinger 4ch kit and a Kicker set for the sub and they not only look awesome but the quality is good as well. Strung really nicely, good shielding and they look sweet too, screw radio-shack, never again haha.

The keys to this sounding good though definitely came down to install, even with all this stuff you could ruin the SQ just by not installing it properly. Me and my buddy soldered all the connections and heatshriked them. Also made all connections with the proper adapters so anything that may need to come undone was done properly and not just clamped down or taped and what not haha. We dynamatted both front doors figuring since the speakers would be pushing 150watts or so so said eh why not. all in all they really quieted the doors down, no rattles or anything like that, the sound is just amazing.

We custom mounted the tweeters for both obviously since these didn't have anything, chose the front mirror cover area for the fronts and that turned out great. Easy install area and the sound is nice, imaging is good. I prefer it up top, some like the tweet closer to the woofer but I know I have no ears in my leg so I couldn't hear it haha, even with it aimed up it doesn't do them justice. Mounted the rear tweeter flush in the top of the door panel so they look factory an install was cake!

All in all guys Id have to say it worked out awesome, stuff sounds great, look great and thats a tribute to our hard-work. Took me and a buddy about 18 hours from start to finish. Had a few brew brakes but ehhh not bad Id say for the amount of ripping and tearing we did haha. Feel free to pm with any questions or stuff like that.

ps - look for video shortly, if I dont post it, keep bumping this so I dont forget lol

I'm going to look at Focal, Hertz, and Dynaudio tomorrow will share details. I'm upgrading for sure, Alpine is ok for the source, but not cutting it...excited to do this project will share

Re: Speaker Brand Suggestions

Today I went to 4 separate shops and just listened to a ton of combo's, evaluated options, etc. The brands I listened to:

JL
Alpine SPX 17 - PRO series
focal k2 line
Hertz Hi-Energy HSK 165s
Dynaudio
audison (higher end line of hertz)

Dynaudio, Focal, and Audison each have a really high end line (>$5k for pair) that I'm not considering, but in the end I decided that for the money the Audison VOCE line is incredible, and the JL amps and subs are plenty good to power the system given the digital bit processor from audison. I need to consider some nuances around the systems current ability to decode and play (somewhat accurate) DVD (audio and 5.1), but we'll work it out. Somewhat difficult to pull out that center channel speaker but ill figure out a way to get it out and put in a VOCE. There is enough room in the trunk on the sides for the installer to work with(JL SUBS) without doing false floors and stealthboxes and other custom stuff that i have zero interest in...want complete discreet install. We have high confidence in the project. To me, Audison was a brand I had NO clue existed before today, but will be the speaker choice...they were impressive, I'm pretty excited.
