http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/

Increasing cone area only adds higher sensitivity if the parameters are sufficient. A high Q 15 isnt usually as efficient as a low Q 10 but without a super low fs a low q woofer is practically a large mid-bass. Cone area output increase is based on the old belief that higher vas equals more output. This only holds true if few other parameters change. If the Fs drop's out of proportion to the increase in Vas then the sub will lose output, just as if the Q parameters rises out of proportion to the increase in Vas you will lose output also. A drop in fs usually creates a rise in Qts as does mms increasing due to the larger set of soft parts.

Fi stuff is okay, fluxtech (buildhouse of Fi and AA) builds decent stuff but outta all the subs of theirs ive tested their posted tsp's are barely within the 30% tolerance in accuracy.

As a rule of thumb (set in stone) A sub needs a Qts of no less than .42 to reach its Fs as F3 in its optimum enclosure. Below that you'll rely on port resonance/pressure to achieve output below Fs, To High of a qts will make the optimum enclosure impractically large, low Qts has the opposite effect.

Port area is dictated by Qes and Vas, there is no set number of sq" per cubic ft that is relatively correct. Low Qes speakers move more air and need more area to keep vent mach at a usable level and help the efficiency of the enclosure. Proper vent mach helps keep enclosure impedance rise at a more practical amount.

Qes and area thumb rules
Low Qes (.3 and under) needs around 75% Sd figure as area if tuned below 38Hz
Mid Q can function at 1/2 Sd

High Q can use as little as 1/4 Sd and be okay

Port area to volume ratio is more important than area alone to control vent mach, multiple smaller ports have lower VM than a single larger at the same tuning freq.

Plenty more to come as I have more spare time.

Achieving the response your looking for from your build can be as simple as picking the sub with the proper parameters and loading it properly, or as complicated as picking a random woofer and trying to build an enclosure to make it respond as you'd like.

Re: Speaker Porn??

Doubling the number of speakers you are using adds 3dB (youve doubled your acoustic output) and this is only true if the speakers are the same parameter set. A pioneer 10 and a Sundown 10 is not acoustic doubling, if one driver is 3dB louder than the other, you will not hear the lower sensitivity driver. So anyone running a 15 and a 10, more than likely, you will not have much gain if any from the 10 and infact, if their phases are different enough, you may have cancellation instead of gain.

This is based on same input power and flat response enclosures

All in all seem like your boy knows what's up with subs. Whats he think of RE, he ever run the XXX, always a solid pounding sub from everything I've ever seen/heard! Ive always liked JL sub for pricing reasons as Im not to keen on dropping more than few bills on a sub but one day Id love to grab one of those comp series subs!
thats only a few of my drivers lol.

Re: Speaker Porn??

I stray from mass produced/chinese/overseas junk (unless german or danish) Qc is never tops and TSP consistency is never up to my standards. I never pay more tha 400 for a driver unless its a custom built one of a kind, guaranteed to my tsp spec driver. RE wise, the old true RE was better than the new US Amps junk and JL has never met my standards, they are simply way over priced and under engineered

Re: Speaker Porn??

Audio Phil what are your thoughts towards SSA stuff? And what sub or pair of subs would you recommed for a nice daily driver that is very musical and accurate but also can get somewhat loud[under 200 per sub]. I am looking at running around 1000 watts total. Finally what would you reccomend for for alow cost 800-1000 watt amp[under 350].

Re: Speaker Porn??

Ok, so my golden question: not wanting to compete, but make heads turn about 1/2 mile away --> what would be good for our GC's, that's nice and loud, crisp, doesnt take up too much cargo room, but still affordable?

under 200 per, id recommend low level LI's or the TB Ultra's like I used in DKS's jeep.

My pair of TB Ultras in 1.5net per @ 35 managed 143.3 @ headrest @ 34Hz on 1200
