Total Newb Question

So I'm like 95% clueless when it comes to sound systems and it's time I get something going in the Jeep. I snagged the last JVC 600watt amp while it was on sale for $55 at Wal-Mart. Now I'm looking into what kind of Subs I want, whether or not I need a new deck, and what kind of box to get or build.

I'm thinking 2 12"s would be pretty nice. I'd love to find something really good at a relatively low price. I'm not looking to spend $1000s here but I don't want a POS either. Suggestions?

And with an 06' Laredo, will I need a new deck to run subs? If so, is Pioneer best?

I was looking at vented dual 12"s boxes on eBay. Is there anything in particular to look for in a box? Is it easy enough/worth the effort to build a box by hand?

Thanks in advance, Nick

Nick, throw up the model # of that amp you got so the audio savvy guys have a point to work from

You will have to tap into the factory wiring to get an audio channel unless your deck has RCA's out. It's been awhile since I played with audio so i'll let the experts chime in. Good luck!

Re: Total Newb Question

Not sure where you got 600w from.... it outputs 200w @ 4ohm (bridged).

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KSA4...02.html?tp=115

If you're trying to keep costs down I'd shoot for a very efficient single 15" woofer (given the power you have on tap). Also, don't get a ported enclosure without knowing the specs on it. You can't thrown any woofer in any ported enclosure and expect good results. Ported enclosures need to be designed for the woofer they house. Sealed enclosures are a little more forgiving.

I'd probably pair that amp with something like a JBL GTO 15" single 4-ohm woofer. They are a great budget sub and are very efficient.

The amplifier has speaker level inputs, so you can tap into the factory amp and get signal through that.

You'll also need an amplifier wiring kit. As cheap as they are I'd go with a 4 gauge kit.

Re: Total Newb Question

Great info!

2 things - do you have an enclosure you'd recommend to pair with the JBL GTO?

And is there a good link for more details concerning "The amplifier has speaker level inputs, so you can tap into the factory amp and get signal through that."?

Thanks!

JBL recommends proper enclosures, unlike a lot of other manufacturers... I'd go with what they suggest.

The speaker level inputs don't require the purchase of anything (like a LOC or new headunit). The amp should come with wires, but you may need to buy that yourself. Shouldn't be more than a few bucks at the local hardware store.

You'll basically tap into the speaker wires that are outgoing from the factory amplifier (preferably the rear speaker wires). Should be in the manual.

Re: Total Newb Question

I tried to put the rca conversion box in at the stereo and I couldnt controll the bass settings so all I heard was loud bass even with the stereo turned up one notch. I tried to splice it in at the amp and got no sound at all?
After messing with this for a week I said F--k it and bought a after market stereo, put the harnest in and didnt have any sound out of the door speakers. I had to cut the door speaker wires at the factory amp and run wires to the deck in order not to have to run wires to the doors. After that I had sound and was able to run wires to the amp and Im bangin now.
I would like to know if anyone has had better luck with running subs with the factory stereo and amp though?

Re: Total Newb Question

Yes... but be SURE you get the single 4 ohm version, not the dual 4 ohm.

You amp outs out the most power at 4 ohms.
