02 Grand Limited for an 04 Rocky Mountain

Thinking of trading in my 02 Grand 4.7L with 208,000kms for an 04 Rocky Mountain Edition 4.0L with 155,000kms.

The 04 asking price is $6800 located at a dealer. I'm wondering how reasonable that price is for this truck. I think its a good starting point. I've got my 02 listed for $6000 but have put quite a bit into it to make it pretty mint including almost $1000 in tires and about $600 in paint work to make it pretty.

If I can do $1000 diff plus taxes I'd be willing to make the trade, $1500 plus taxes if I got to swap tires on the two and am hoping to have a look at the 04 later this week. Is this reasonable?

My 02 has leathers, dual zone HVAC, 10 disk changer, select trac II awd, etc... and runs mint, its a V8 so I'm thinking even with a few extra clicks the 04 shouldn't be that much more than my 02. It has no leathers, no 10 disk changer, no dual zone, etc... etc... Am I out to lunch or is this reasonable?

Before I have a look at the 04, any tips on things to look for with a 4.0L that may raise an eyebrow as to some potential issues down the road? My grand is rock solid but I'm looking down size engines and get into something with out the dual zone HVAC. its given me problems and now that most of the issues are corrected I dont want to deal with it through another winter. Thoughts?

Re: 02 Grand Limited for an 04 Rocky Mountain

I love my 4.0L. It lacks power, but just keeps ticking like a clock.

I've read that the 4.0L has a pretty noisy valve train. I have just over 100k miles and mine doesn't make a sound. I would be skeptical of any vehicle with noise in that area.

Also, the tranny (42RE) is the weak link. Drive it and make sure it goes in and out of all the gears. I honestly hate the tranny because it's pretty "clunky" at times. If you're going 45 and want to pass someone, you need about 2 miles. :P
On mine, downshifting from 4th to 3rd feels fine and gives you a little bit of pickup. But when it goes from 4th to 2nd, it feels like the tranny is about to fall out the bottom of the Jeep (HUGE jolt). I just avoid downshifting into 2nd because I want to save my tranny.

Re: 02 Grand Limited for an 04 Rocky Mountain

Personally, I wouldn't do it. You know how you've maintained yours and in what shape it's truly in. You don't know anything about this other one. Both are "high mileage". I guess I'd rather throw a few more bucks into something that I know it's history.

Plus if you're looking for better fuel economy, the 4.0 isn't any better than the 4.7.

If you're doing it anyway, the 4.0 is as bulletproof as everyone says it is. I had one in my Wrangler and my XJ. Solid motors. Yes, a little loud, but who cares?

Re: 02 Grand Limited for an 04 Rocky Mountain

yeah, I feel like the 4.0 lacks power which is why I went with a 4.7 when I picked up my grand last fall. I was always looking for an 04 rocky mountain but never could find one that I thought was in decent shape and at a decent price. I've found 2 now, one with 155,000kms and one with 160,000km that seem to be in better condition than my Limited. I'd like to keep the V8 but have never seen a rocky mountain with a V8 so I have to give that up looks like. I dont mind parting with leather and dual zone hvac, i hate my dual zone hvac. one headache after another. I'm just looking to simplify by going for less bells and whistles and more form/functionality. Have always loved the rocky mountain esthetically speaking. If can get into one for near par with my trade I will likely do it.

I hear you about maybe taking on someone else's problems but the same sorta holds true for my WJ. HVAC works fine now, but who knows. It broke twice on me in 1 year and I expect it to happen again unless I go out and spend some money on a proper repair in which case, that money seems better used to trade up into a new a model. At least I think so.

Re: 02 Grand Limited for an 04 Rocky Mountain

I'm not sure where you're located...and I know that the Rocky Mountain is the US version of the "Freedom Edition". Have you tried searches for the Freedom Edition and the Columbia editions? If you're in Canada, it may not be hard to get into one. I know I found a handful of these in Ohio during my search.
I've been lucky to not have any issues with my dual zone in my Limited. I figured if I ever did, I'd look to swap it out for a non-dual zone system, but I understand you're pain and your situation with the mileage. It may be smarter to dump it and get into another one.
At least here in the states....the more you can do privately the better. Avoiding dealers is key. I was able to sell my XJ privately and buy my WJ privately. Makes for a lot less money lost during the process.

Re: 02 Grand Limited for an 04 Rocky Mountain

I would prefer the more sofisticated 45RFE above the 42RE. Also the later is still using bands, which have to be adjusted now and then.
Also, if the HVAC would start giving problems again, you could do the cheap single zone repair and make it almost the same as the manual temperature control system.
As the others said, you know your jeep now, but buying an other jeep can give you also a lot of other unpleasant surprises.

Re: 02 Grand Limited for an 04 Rocky Mountain

i do like my drive train very much. I could fix the HVAC with $150 and a weekend and go for the non dual zone method. I also recently noticed the truck should have new weather stripping installed as there is dirt and evidence of water running along the inside of the door jambs where the rear wheel hump is. I'm pretty sure thats why windows fog up on colder days too. I'm sure air gets through there if water and dirt does. I do have a small issue with sticky windows in the winter, sometimes the drivers side front gets stuck. Cost me a new regulator assembly last year.

Decisions decisions. Test drive will tell me what to do for sure.

Any other suggestions?

I have tried looking for the columbia editions also. Not much out there unless its a liberty. I will check for freedom editions. I have not seen a Rocky Mountain edition with a V8 but I did find this so it they could exist. If I could find a 4.7 with the 45RFE that would be ideal. 45RFE was only available with V8 or was it optional on the 4.0 anyone know?

Before I bought my limited, I really was after a rocky mountain but damn were they pricey, they have come down a ton since last year. Its whats making think maybe I should go for one now.

There was a gorgeous Freedom Edition FSBO in Allendale, MI last week. Dark Graphite, all the trimmings.
