2001 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 Hydraulic Fan Issues

I have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee i am having issues with the Hydraulic fan Sometimes when i start the jeep it tries to move then stops and sometimes when i start it it moves fine i replaced the coolant sensor and when i pulled the coolant sensor plug the fan took off full speed so dont think the solenoid is bad but it is just weird sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't i can restart the jeep 3 times and it will not work then let it sit a few mins start it and it kicks in fine What fluid are you suppose to use power steering fluid or Atf4? i just did the head gaskets and put power steering fluid back in it because that is what was there. Also i have seen a few people try but not sure if anyone has been successful but has anyone here successfully removed the Hydraulic fan and replaced it with electric?

Sounds like the coolant temp sensor is going out. When you unhooked it, it defaulted to a safe mode and kicked the fan on full time.

I just replaced it it still does it could it be the fluid i used i use valvoline ps fluid i just put it back together because the head gaskets went bad whatever controls the fan seams like the problem because it works fine sometimes and other times it doesnt spin at idle and can overheat

Re: 2001 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 Hydraulic Fan Issues

The hydraulic cooling fan should run at around 500 rpm as soon as the engine is running, and will ramp up the speed when the engine coolant temperature rises above a certain level or when AC demands. There is a special fluid for the power steering system, but im running an other brand than the recommended one without problems. It should be a synthetic power steering fluid. It can be that the fluid you have used, is not the right one. The temperature sensor at least is not an input needed for the fan to run its idle 500 rpm, its just the way the circuit of the hydraulic motor is designed. Did you already feel by hand if the fan motor is not hard to turn?
