Hi I an 2003 cherokee overland with 123k on it and it has a little oil leak from the
Autobox,
My question is can I change the oil and filter on the box or do I have to take it to a specialist,

Also I have noticed a groning noise coming from the back, now it's had a new transfer box
Fitted and propsharft, could this be a bearing or maybe the prop out of balance,
The box and prop was fitted before I purchased the car.

Your thoughts please

The transmission/autobox is an easy job. If I can do it, anyone can. The filter kits are available online. I bought a new pan while I was at it. It's messy, but straightforward. Drop the pan, let it drain, remove filter, replace, fit the new pan and RTV gasket, bolt it back up. I let it sit overnight before refilling just to make sure the RTV had plenty of time to properly set up.

The groaning (if you're convinced it's driveline and not suspension) could very well be an out of balance driveshaft, or a failing rear differential. Folks also tend to fail to use the proper fluid in the differentials and that can cause all kinds of noises or chattering during turns.

If your jeep has the 4.7 engine, then it should have the 5-45RFE transmission, where Tony was talking about. This transmission has two filters, but be aware that the oval inlet filter is different between the 4x2 and 4x4.
If it has the 4.0 engine, then it has the 42RE transmission.
If your jeep has the 2.7 CRD, then it has the NAG1 transmission.

I have no experience in servicing the W5J400 or NAG1 transmission. I know that it has a drain plug, which will make the draining a lot easier then on the 5-45RFE. There is no dip stick on this transmission, only a fill tube, which is capped. You can easily remove the cap, but will need a dipstick to get the right fluid level.
Attached the procedure to fill and check the level. I couldn´t find the full procedure for the fluid change from the beginning.
