4.7 HO, recommended oil weight?

I know this is a NewB question, but I have a simple question that when searched resulted in no results. I am seeing conflicting information regarding recommended oil weight for the 2004 Overland 4.7 HO. I recently bought an extremely clean 04 Overland and the dealer did the oil and the sticker says they used 5w30. I read the owners manual and I'm pretty sure that also says 5w30 recommended for the HO as well. The oil fill cap does not say any weight on it. However I'm reading wjjeeps.com and now that says use 10w30 for the HO. This is not the first time I have seen conflicting info between the owners manual and what's in wjjeeps.

Thanks for any help.

Re: 4.7 HO, recommended oil weight?

The difference between 5W30 and 10W30 is pretty insignificant. Some people will say that you should go with the thinnest winter weight you can find because it allows more oil to flow on start up (when most damage occurs). Others will say only use the recommended oils.

I say that the difference between 5W30 and 10W30 doesn't matter.

Re: 4.7 HO, recommended oil weight?

Here in Brazil the stealer uses 0W30 in the normal 4.7. Indeed it is better to have a thinner oil at startup, to have the oil as soon as possible at the more distant bearings. Most engine wear happens at startup, when there is no oil under pressure at the bearings yet. Since its still a W30 oil, it has the same viscosity at operating temperature.
But all this said, looking at the WJ service manual, it states to use 10W30 in the HO only.

Re: 4.7 HO, recommended oil weight?

Thanks for the replies guys. Man, I must be blind because all I see in the manual is 5w30 for all conditions. I'll have to have a looksy again.

Thanks!

10W30 here too...it's all I've ever run in my HO. Not that it matters, but I've only run Royal Purple Syn with a K&N oil filter. Nearing 115k.

I ran 5w20 this summer by accident. No harm so far.

Exactly what I'm running at the moment, use the same Royal Purple in my RX8 as well.

Been Napa 5w30 Full Synth (made by Valvoline) with Napa Gold filters since day one. With the Autometer oil pressure gauge even when hot the oil pressure is over 75 lbs cold. It is currently showing 117k miles.
