690 miles from home haveing issues!!

Hello new member long time lurker. I have a 04 Limited 4.7 v8. Bought the jeep in march. I have never had an issue yet. 111,000 miles. Im currently in Myrtle Beach. Going back to Pittsburgh next sunday.

Today on I-95 I had the cruise set to 75mph. Traffic was up my tail so I used my foot to increase my speed to 85 to pass a semi. Took about 3-4 miles with my foot on the gas.

Soon after I noticed at 75 my RPMs were banging between 2000/2500 in a loop with no throttle movements on my part. Road was totally flat. Cruise was off. After 120 miles doing this, it jumped to 3500 "Actually left OD or downshifted" with no throttle change on my part. Check engine light came on.

So I panicked and yanked over to a rest stop. P121 or whatever it was came up TPS sensor. Got back on the highway and made a few more stops. After that first re-start it quit doing it. 75 miles later the light went out. I wonder if it was due to the cruise set point and my foot holding past??

My other issue is I noticed above 80 mph when I take my foot off the gas I get a NRRRRR coming from the drive train. A slight vibration. But its done it since I bought it. Transfer Case/Both differentials were full with clear clean gear oil no shavings. Tranny fluid is pink and universals are tight?? Should I keep it below 75mph and prepare for the axle to lock and trow me into a spin. lol Sorry just paranoid got my wife and 5-monthold daughter 700 miles from home lil nerve racking? Should I just go to auto zone and buy the sensor in case were back on 95 and it goes. Lastly would a bad TPS leave the Jeep inoperable?

Welcome to the garage.
A bad TPS can cause the problems you described. Normally a bad TPS will not let you stranded, but cause bad shifting or what you have. If you could get a new TPS, i would buy it and even change it, just one connector and two screws (torque x 25 i believe).

Thanks. Needed some reassurance. Not sure if this Model feature has a Limp mode or not. Buddy has the 09 patriot with fly by wire and his tps left him with a top speed of 25 mph.

Re: 690 miles from home haveing issues!!

Your jeep has the 5-45 rfe transmission, which uses 3rd gear for limp home. But it will only go into limp mode when the TCM sees a situation which could harm the transmission. If a TPS would totally fail ( no output signal anymore, from which i never have heard of), the engine will not pass idle rpm.
Oh, and regarding the drivetrain noise, its most probably differential gear whine.

I second this and recommend spending the money for the Mopar piece from the dealer. My reading tells me that the aftermarket pieces don't play well. Before I replaced my TPS at 85k miles, my WJ did some really weird stuff.

Absolutely, buy Mopar ONLY for sensors. Aftermarket sensors are not made with the quality of construction they should be. I paid $50 for a NAPA Premium oil pressure sensor (hecho en Mexico) only to have it read 40 psi ANYTIME the engine was running, hot or cold! The Mopar sensor cost me $79 but it works the way it's supposed to.

Thanks for the info. Jeep made it home just fine. Noticed it only acts up after 2/3 hours at constant speed. Light will come on for about 100 miles and go out. Found once it starts twitching to floor it and I'm good for another 2/3 hours. Been driving 15 mis to work and zero issue! Just down right weird. Going in for my free trailer hitch. Oil pan is rotted so figured I'd have the garage do it all.
