99 Jeep cherokee no overdrive

I bought this jeep used about a year ago. It has its fair share of problems but I am most concerned with the overdrive not working.

There are no codes at the moment. However over the past month I have recorded a number of codes off and on that may or may not have anything to do with it. They are ( P0305, P0132 , P0171 , P0711 , P0720 )

I have no engine light. I mean I don't even see it when I turn the key. Just one that says check gauges and it came on once a while back when the oil temp sensor went out, change and went away.

The overdrive light never comes on. I push the button on the shifter and nothing happens, no light, no change in shifting.

The way it runs is this. at 65mph the rmp's are at around 3000. Otherwise it shifts normally but just runs real high as if no overdrive. lots of power but bad gas milage... and cant be good on long trips like that.

Here is where it gets real strange. When it dips real cold, keep in mind I am in Georgia and real cold means 45 or less, it works... Briefly. Still non overdrive light and the button still does nothing but it will run as if in overdrive, real smooth, lower rpms... like a dream, for about 5 min or 5 miles or so. The engine temp does not seem to matter in this case, warm engine or cold still does the same thing.

I have 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 6cylinder engine, 4x4 but the 4x4 shaft was removed before I bought it (no reason to why). Not sure the type of transmission.

Any idea's?

Re: 99 Jeep cherokee no overdrive

Welcome to the garage.
The 4.0 engine comes with the 42RE transmission. It seems that there is a problem with the overdrive solenoid/circuit. There can be a wire problem or a bad contact in the connector on the transmission, but most probably the overdrive solenoid (its a part of the overdrive and lock up solenoid assy) has a problem. You could start measuring the wiring, just to rule out any problem there. To replace the overdrive/lock up solenoid assy, you will have to drop the transmission pan. If you would do so, then you could eventually also change the governor solenoid and governor sensor, just to prevent opening it all up again lateron. Here is a good address for electrical transmission parts (OEM): http://www.electricaladvantage.net/a...kit96to99.aspx
