Advice

Hello,
I have never owned a jeep before but have always been a fan. My question is How are the engines on a 99 Grand Cherokee with 236, 000 miles?

My friend is selling a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. He brought it at an auction for 600. He fixes the 4*4 tranmission, new front grill, sensors, oil change and basic tune up. He fixed it up for his wife who decided to keep her car. This man is in his lower 40.

Its runs good and I believe it's in good shape. My husband and I need a better car for camping then our accord and oldmobile considering we go in the hills.

My concern is the miles. He believes it the orginal engine with 236, 000 miles.

Is 1700.00 a good deal for this car? I have seen both good and bad on price and he has someone who will buy it for 2000.00 but oftered it to me first.

Any advice will be great
Thank you

Re: Advice

Welcome to the garage.
Which engine does it have?
It all depends on how the jeep was maintained by the previous owner(s). The 4.0L is known to be a very dependable engine which will run for a long time. The 4.7L is a newer engine, which is dependable as well, but is known to be sludge sensitive (probably due to poor maintenance) and also very sensitive regarding overheating. If it once overheats, it can warp the heads or it can lateron drop valve seats.
Buying used is allways a gamble, but i would listen very well to the engine noises while cold and hot, to see if there is any obvious problem.
If not changed yet, there probably will come a time that the timing chains will need to be changed, which is not a very cheap fix.
Regarding the price, i have no idea, since i donīt live in the States.

Re: Advice

Thank you My fiance is going to have him bring it to work(They are co-workers) so I can look at it in the daylight. I did test drive it a few nights ago, and It handled great on the snow and ice, and drove really smooth. I only was going about 40 miles, since I wanted to me caution..Its a v8 engine. Inside was nice and clean. The gages all work. There is two small dents in the back side doors, and a scape along the passenger front bumper. My fiance knows the basic of jeeps, since his son has a jeep.

Re: Advice

I personally wouldn't want to pay that much for a hi mileage 4.7L jeep. Now the 4.0L will run forever. we bought a '00 2 years ago for $1000 w/ 210,000 & it's still running good & we're closing in on 250,000.

It's the other vehicle systems which will start giving you trouble before the 4.0L will. The control arms on the suspension will squeak & make horrible noises (but still work ok), The transmission front seal may start to leak, the steering box may have a lot of slop.....wheel bearings start to howl.....the list goes on for things that start to wear out when they get a lot of miles. You just have to decide what you are willing to put up with when it comes to a hi mileage vehicle.

Blackstone Labs. Check them out online. Basically, you can send them small samples of the engine oil (or trans oil if you want) and they will do an analysis on it and tell you the overall condition of the engine. If they find an abundance of certain metals or chemicals that are outside of tolerance, they report back to you. Totally worth it if you ask me.
