Almost stalling when shifted into park

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. Sometimes when I shift from drive to park the rpms go down to 200 and then back up to around 650. This does not happen all of the time. Also sometimes when sitting at a red light the rpms will go down to 400 and sit there. I have already replaced the iac and cleaned the throttle body. Could it be the throttle position sensor?

Re: Almost stalling when shifted into park

This is very well possible. At ignition on, the PCM takes the TPS position and uses it as the idle setting. If the idle setting is not stable, it could increase or decrease the rpm. If you have a scanner with live data, you can observe the TPS % and see if it is a stable value.

At idle the tps percentage is 11.8. But sometimes is will jump to 12.2 then back to 11.8.

Re: Almost stalling when shifted into park

The TPS should be a stable value when the accelerator pedal is not touched, so it seems to be faulty. But the increase of the % should cause a rpm increase and not a decrease, as is your problem. But since your problem is erratic, i would still suspect the TPS.

Re: Almost stalling when shifted into park

Im using an aftermarket TPS on my jeep, but in general, the Mopar parts give less problems on our jeeps.

My tps percentage now is going from 11.8 to 11.4 sometimes at idle. Also the tps is doing the same thing with the jeep on but not started.

I put the new tps in yesterday and I was pretty steady at 12.5%. Then today it was going from 12.5% to 12.2%. I also have some mode 6 fails. 1/1 half cycle counter, iac shift, and rpm shift. I cant find anything about what these mean.

Could the rpm drop sometimes be caused by a bad crankshaft or camshaft sensor?

Could a leak in a fuel injector o-ring cause almost stalling?
