Backup lights help

Hello all

this is my first post as i found this forum recently and i like it a lot,

i want your help guys on this, i have a problem with my 2002 JGC backup lights, i have checked the fuses and the bulbs and every thing is working fine.

when i switch to reverse gear the lights does not light up, last week i went out to an off road trip and suddenly after a lot of vibrations and shocking on the sands when i switch to reverse gear the bulbs light up both and kept working fine for 2 days. so now they are working sometimes and some not.

Any ideas? any one faced such and issue?

Thanks

Re: Backup lights help

Sounds like a loose connector/wire somewhere in the system. Sometime when they're not working, I would get a wiring diagram, DMM, and start tracing the system.

Re: Backup lights help

The 5-45 RFE is coupled to the 4.7L. The reverse switch is inside of the transmission and is part of the solenoid block. This can only be changed as a complete assy and cost around USD 280. (Automotive Transmission Electronics Specialists)
If you have the 4.0 then it has the 42RE transmission, which has the switch on the outside of the housing.
Next time it doesn't work, try to wiggle the transmission lever a bit or select reverse a few times and see if they come on. A sligtly misaligned shift lever could be the problem as well.

Re: Backup lights help

You can bypass the switch by putting a jumper wire between pins 1 and 6 on the large TRS solenoid connector on the left side of the transmission. Then you will be sure that the problem lays internally with the switch and not externally with a wire.
If you decide to change the solenoid pack, then i can give you some tips to do this job. You need to have some basic tools and a bit of mechanics experience, because you will need to remove the valve body to get access to the solenoid pack. No rocket sience though.
