Bad,Bad Week for Ole Silver

Been running the Jeep to work for the last few weeks because my work car pretty much needs a new car but that's another story. Last week the air just up and died and now this week the old check engine light came on while driving home Did the dance when I got home and about puked when it barfed out 7 fricken codes at me! Man she was flatlining on me so I ran over and hooked up the charger and shocked it on 100 amps to try to save it! Well it turned out that 3 of them were a/c related which I caused by unplugging things and changing relays and stuff.Three more were O2 sensor related that were not serious enough to trip the MIL so I didn't know about them until now. Guess it's time to do the Tony thrash and change all 4. But............that bastardly last one ,the one that tripped the MIL,the one I read about years ago and hoped I'd never see .....1499 hydraulic fan control solenoid, have to buy a new $1000 fan pops up on my WJ! Couldn't be somebody else's where I could stand to the side with my head down and say wow I feel for you brother.....nope mine. Well as it turns out there are 2 different solenoids used on the WJ, a 3 wire and a 2 wire. Luckily I have the 3 wire which is the same as a WK and you can still get for a measly $200(it's not worth $30 honestly). The 2 wire guys have to buy a new fan because they don't make the solenoid anymore. Found mine here for $138 but if anyone knows of a cheaper place let me know. Mopar Part 05143201AA HYDRAULIC FAN CONTROL SWITCH After some exhaustive research there is some hope for the 2 wire guys though. Seems a certain Lincoln uses the exact same part with a different shaped plug that is readily available, can be adapted and works fine. I stopped looking into this when I found I had the 3 wire. Hmmmm thinking about your issues and can't help but wonder........... have you used, stored, placed near or in any way exposed the jeep to your multi-colored shade/rain protection device?

Just saying...................... I wouldn't blame my jeep for throwing a fit if exposed to a rainbow umbrella.

Re: Bad,Bad Week for Ole Silver

He Dave, did you already try disconnecting the engine coolant temp sensor, to see if the fan will go to high speed? And then reset the PCM and see what it does?
Did you also check fuse #16 in the PDC, which is the power to the control solenoid? Also measure voltage between pin 1 and ground (12V). There will only be power with the engine running, since its switched via
the auto shutdown relay. Also check pin 3 to ground, which should be 0 ohm or very close to it. Pin 2 is for the control signal from the PCM.

There's power and a ground up there Frank but I'll give your temp sensor/reset theory a shot . Never know maybe it's just stuck. Thanks bud!

Re: Bad,Bad Week for Ole Silver

Update: Jeep is fixed thanks to FrankWhen checking the fuses again after reading Franks post I found I had missed #16 as it is kinda off by itself. It's labeled O2 sensors and guess what it was blown. Fan code is now gone along with all the O2 sensor codes ! After some checking as to the cause I got back under the Jeep and started looking around. When they lowered the y pipe to change the oil pan they unknowingly pulled loose a clip holding the rear sensor loom away from the exhaust and it eventually came against the pipe and melted the insulation on one of the wires. Fixed that up and added a heat sleeve and am now good to go.After looking at the FSM again I see that Frank had to take the time to drill down through 4 pages of schematics to find that the two systems are tied together. I would have never caught that. Thank you brother you are a true lifesaver on this forum and that's not even counting the money I would have spent chasing ghosts! + rep to you sir and I owe you one buddy!

Re: Bad,Bad Week for Ole Silver

Good to hear its fixed Dave. You see you can better do the jobs yourself, because when you let others do it for you, you will end up with some "side effects".
Glad i could help.

Re: Bad,Bad Week for Ole Silver

Glad it got straightened out Dave! That damn hydraulic fan has always worried me on the WJ, luckily I haven't had any issues yet. I will make sure to check EVERY fuse first if I get that code. Thanks for digging up all that info Frank!

This is why I love forums ! I don't even have my wj yet and I've run the whole range of excitement and nervous over what can go wrong and I run into a post like this, it starts out $1000 and drops to $200 in the initial post and then rapidly to a $5 fix because a fellow enthusiast took the time to help another !

Think Outside !- No Box Required.
