Autozone, Advanced Auto, and O'Reilly all have a free loaner program where you can borrow a ball joint press. You put a payment on them when you take them and then get it back when you return.
Because of that I've never seen or done a ball joint without one. I've seen it done on axle bearings, but not ball joints.
