Bought an 02 Overland today. Looking for some pointers.

I am by no means new to the Jeeps as I have owned a couple XJs, a 2005 WK Limited, an 08 SRT8, and the latest was a 2012 Overland V6. I sold the new 2012 Overland to get back into a more fun car, and now just purchased a old 2002 Overland to get me through winter and to do things with the family.
Anyway, I literally just got it earlier today and now im at work so I don't have pictures to post yet, but its Onyx Green with the darker 02 hammerhead wheels. It has 112,000 miles and is the cleanest WJ I was able to find without having to spend 10K+. I found that in my search of WJs that about 80%+ of them are in horrible condition. I bought it private party and seems like he kept up with issues and maintenance.

I do have a couple questions since this is the first WJ I have owned and am not fully aware of all the problematic areas and things like that. I noticed that when driving with the windows down I hear some sort of squeak that seems to be coming from the drivers front wheel area. It actually almost sounds like a bird chirping and goes with the rotation of the wheel. So it squeaks, then stops, then squeaks etc etc and goes with the speed of the vehicle. Im hoping that someone can tell me what this could be. When the windows are up the truck is surprisingly silent and no harsh noises or anything like bad wheel bearings or such. Nothing looks obvious, but I have not lifted the truck up yet to inspect. I noticed no leaks of any sort and the under carraige is surprisingly clean. The brakes are recent, but it doesn't necessarily sound like a noise brakes could make, although I could be wrong.

The second thing is the previous owner has had an alignment done recently and he even had it back to double check everything was in spec and they confirmed it was. I am noticing that the truck will pull a little bit sometimes depending on the road. The tires are pretty close to being done and he said that Jeep said it was because the tires. Does this sound like it would be true? Pressures were the same both sides and there is no uneven wear on any tires.

Other than that I think its pretty much good to go. Climate control works well, it has a recent battery, starter, and fuel pump/filter all done at Jeep. If anyone can fill me in on any other common things about the 02 Overland I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks guys,
James

4.7HO engine, right? Any record of the cooling system being flushed and refilled with the proper antifreeze? Also consider the transmission filter/fluid change and gear lube with the proper friction modifier for the Quadradrive diffs.

Re: Bought an 02 Overland today. Looking for some pointers.

Yes 4.7 HO. I was under the impression all Overlands had the HO motor, but I suppose I could be wrong.
I didnt run a carfax to see about more specific stuff, but a few somewhat recent receipts he gave me from Jeep are things like new fuel pump and filter, transmission fluid change and filter, and alignment. As for coolant to be honest I do not know just yet. I just got it today and had to go to work right afterwards. So tomorrow I will be going through everything and maybe even run a carfax to see if it tells me anything else about what service has been performed.
As if now my first thing needs to be looking into that squeak that comes and goes with front left tire rotation.

Re: Bought an 02 Overland today. Looking for some pointers.

Just an update I messed around with the Jeep more and removed the drivers front caliper and rotor and cleaned stuff up and put it back together. Nothing looked bad from a simple visual inspection. I put everything back together and it was squeaking pretty bad for about 1 block, then I got into a faster street and found out that I can sort of control the squeak by swerving a little. Then it suddenly went away for the rest of my drive around the block. I then drove the Jeep again later and now its just a constant sqweak sqweak sqweak, but isnt all that loud and is drowned out if the window is up and the A/C is on. With window down though it just sounds like a mouse squeaking down there.
So it is speed related and is most obvious driving at neighborhood speeds. At 50+mph its just too fast to hear the squeak. Is this a wheel bearing issue? It could be, but im hearing no harshness or humming inside the cabin that would typically sound like a bearing It doesnt seem to be brake related as I took that all apart and reassembled and the noise is basically the same, not to mention I can still hear the sqweak regardless of brake pressure being applied.

I really would like some more input as im really having buyers remorse and not very happy with my decision to buy this old Grand Cherokee. Its been one day and I already need to bring this thing in. Ugh. What did I get myself into here?

Thanks,
James

Just look if there is no stone or other debris in between the brake disc and back plate.

When I got my Jeep it made an IDENTICAL noise. It was a chirping noise that was proportional to the speed. Windows up and I couldn't hear it. Going at highway speeds and the wind noise was too loud, couldn't hear it. I couldn't figure out what it was.

I looked and nothing seemed obvious so I swallowed my pride and took it to a shop for diagnostic. They told me it was the front left wheel bearing. I've had wheel bearings go out and they always sounded like a moaning noise, not a chirping noise. But out of any other ideas, I decided I would replace it myself and see what happened. Long story short, it was the wheel bearing. I've never heard one sound like that before, but it was. The good thing is that they're not very expensive and pretty easy to change. I did both sides since one was bad.

Re: Bought an 02 Overland today. Looking for some pointers.

^^^ Thanks for the help guys.

So I bought the wheel hub bearing as it just didnt really make sense to be anything else when I was in there diagnosing the noise. I completed the job this morning and it was cake. I got the old bearing off and I rotated the hub and was absolutely estatic to hear the same noise and I knew the problem was going to be fixed even before I put the new one on. So if anyone gets a goofy chirp sound as described above by me and user Jeepme there is a good chance its the bearing. Also, as soon as I got the axle nut off there was a decent amount of play in the bearing which wasnt noticeable until that nut came off.

Thanks again!

James

When I got the 3 jaw puller to pull the assembly off, it pulled the bearing apart with next to no force.
