Buying advice: I6 vs V8

I'm in the market for another WJ. I've owned an '02 I6 Laredo RWD since new and will be passing that along to another family member soon.

I know the I6 and it's reputation for longevity is attractive to me. I have not had any experience with the V8 except for what I have read on the various forums. I would love to hear thoughts on the pros vs cons on the three vehicles I have narrowed down.

2001 Laredo
I6 4x4
Selec-trac
170k miles - original engine
$2500

2002 Limited
V8 4x4
Selec-trac
158k miles - engine just rebuilt
(rebuilt heads, new head gaskets, new front and rear main seals, waterpump, thermostat and heater core)
$3200

2004 Limited
V8 HO 4x4
Quadra-Drive
185k miles - original engine
$3500

I admit when looking at them like this the '02 seems like the obvious choice but I wonder if overheating may have been the issue for the rebuild and if it might repeat itself in the future.

Thanks in advance for input.

It could of dropped a valve on the 02.

Also something to consider on the 02+ v8's have hydraulic cooling fan(Ie Fan is actually ran from the Powersteering Pump* Which can be expensive to fix.

99-01 v8's use a mechanical fan like the I6

Re: Buying advice: I6 vs V8

I've had both the I4 (in a Wrangler and in a Cherokee) and the V8 in a WJ. Both were solid, reliable engines. I maintain the crap out of my vehicles, but I bet most people on forums like this do too. You'll get the same mileage out of the V8 that you would with the 6, but gobs more power and driving enjoyment. I'm a fan of both, so I'm not much help. I would go with the V8 though if I had to make a choice.

The I-6 will probably still be running when the sun explodes.
They do have quirks, like eating exhaust manifolds and cat convertors, unreliable oil pressure sensors, etc.
They also are a tad thirsty even in stock form--mileage is underwhelming.

For the price difference you could add a good set of headers, possibly even a catback which somewhat helps.

If you might want to customize it later, the I-6 has a boatload of aftermarket options from third parties as well as Mopar 4.7 crate engines themselves. Most of those not created from the old Hudson racing concepts keep that awesome low end torque of the I-6 and add horsepower. ... with even worse mileage if you just want a reliable runner with decent performance and mileage, I'd agree with the V8 route---but if you like to play, go I-6

Re: Buying advice: I6 vs V8

I appreciate the feedback and advice gentlemen.

I hope to be able to go look a couple of them this weekend.

My plan are to have to use as a inclement weather and occasional beach trip.

I have found an '00 Limited V8 with the towing package and 135k miles that looks to be well maintained so that has made the list.

The good thing is that I am in no rush to purchase so can be as picky as I want.

Thanks again for the feedback and have a great weekend.
