Dexron III

Hi Folks,
Have got a funny noise which I thought was the transfer case - clunks when going from neutral into either reverse or drive followed by a springy type stretching noise!!!! I opened the fill plug on the TC and a fair bit came out so I let it finish and then put the plug back in.
I let the motor run and left it in neutral and checked main tranny oil and this was barely registering
Can I top it up with the Dexron III or wait till I can get a few Litres (UK!!) of ATF 4 to top it up?
I don't understand as it was up on full the other day and there's no leaks.
I have a small leak also on the rear transfer case seal / prop and it's quite a thick black substance coming out of there. Is this coming from the transfer case??
I'll post pics up shortly to show you.
Cheers
Paul.

Re: Dexron III

As far as I'm aware, the T/C and axles do not use ATF.

I'd give your dealer a call and get the correct fluid, in all honesty it's not worth the risk!

Re: Dexron III

Hi Mate,
Do you get yours local or over tinternet and what sort of prices do you pay for mopar fluids?
I've got the original 2000/1 Jeep handbook and it recommends ATF +3 for the tranny and Dexron III for the TC - well out of date by now.
I know the 4 wheel drive system now works as I put it into 1st and floored it the neighbour's side of the grass drive - 4 perfectly spaced wheelspin marks!
Cheers

here's the leak - what comes from here as the TC was full and fluid was clear.

Re: Dexron III

I got the fluids changed at the dealer, only thing I ever bought by the bottle was power steering fluid.

I know they refilled my transmission with ATF 4+, no idea on the mopar fluids used in the diffs and TC though. Fluids aren't actually that expensive, its availability since they were taken over by FIAT.

Re: Dexron III

WRONG The NV247 TCASE Requires Special due to the clutch packs

Only the Nv242/HD uses ATF+4

And only use ATF+4 IN ALL 99-04 wj transmissions

I REPEAT DO NOT USE DEX 3.

Grand Cherokee WJ's use three different 4-wheel drive transfer cases, identified on the interior shift console. A circular ID tag is attached to the rear of each transfer case. The ID tag provides the transfer case model number, assembly number, gear ratio and location of manufacture. The transfer case serial number also represents the date of build. Re: Dexron III

Cheers for the info chaps - I'll get on the case this morning for some ATF +4 for the tranny as the transfer case is full and I'll take the Dexron III back for refund.
I can't figure out how to add a sound clip for the grindy / winding up a spring type noise so I'll tyr and get a video and put that up.
It's a real pain as I've got no speakers on my work PC.
Just found this which may be of some use to everyone:-

Quite correct !!!!
Have a close look at the image and the fill plug - lovely clear red fluid coming out - ATF+4 !!!!

Luckily I mentioned this when speaking to Chris @ Mansfield 4x4 first thing this morning and he said that there shouldn't be red stuff in there so I ordered some friction modifier for the diffs and the correct juice for the TC from him straight away - lucky conversation really.
Thankfully the FSH I have with it is all dealer stamped apart from the last one which wasn't long ago and the OCD previous owner prob thought that the ATF+4 went in everything.
I think I'll change everything for peace of mind so I know I'm starting with a clean slate.
Fingers crossed the funny noise should disappear.
Good weekend All !!
Paul.

Re: Dexron III

I would not bother too much about the slight leak of the T-case to aft propeller shaft joint. This is a slip joint, which let the shaft go in and out of the T-case a bit, when the aft suspension moves up and down. Just keep an eye on it once in a while that it doesn´t get worse. When necessary, you can easily change the seal by only removing the propeller shaft ( remove the 4 bolts on the U-joint at the aft diff and slide the shaft out of the T-case. Mark the position of the shaft before removing, to put it back exactly at the same position lateron). Also have a look at the breather cap of the T-case ( nicely hidden between the engine and firewall), because when that one is blocked, there will be a pressure buildup in the T-case when warming up, and the fluid will try to escape via the seals.
ATF +4 in the diffs is not a good thing and hopefully it was not in there for a long time, or you could face some serious wear/damage to the gears.
The ATF+4 in the T-case should not have done any harm, since they where factory filled with it in 1999. They only changed it to Mobil 424 due to problems with clutch chatter in the progressive coupler.
Dexron III should not be used in the tranny. This is normally a mineral fluid and the ATF +4 is a fully synthetic fluid. The mineral fluid will wear out prematurely and can cause damage in the long run.
Be sure to check the fluid level with the transmission at operating temperature. The cold mark is ok to use after filling and cold fluid, but best is to use the hot mark and fluid at operating temp.

Re: Dexron III

Thanks for that Frank - I should have all the correct fluids delivered today.
What's the easiest way to check the breather cap - from inside the engine bay or from underneath?
Cheers
Paul.

Re: Dexron III

You should be able to see the cap from inside the engine bay. Maybe it would be even better to remove the breater hose from the T-case and blow air through it. Then you know that both cap and hose are open.

Re: Dexron III

Right, I now have all the juices ready for tranny, TC and diffs !!!
Time to go to work.
I also read somewhere to put a bit of the friction modifier in the TC - is this ok?
For anyone in the UK having problems getting ATF+4 there's a company called Millers Oil who do it under their own brand.
Cheers
Paul.
