Well took it to local shop in town. Guy is a jeep enthusiast and messes with a lot of 4.0 motors . dsid without getting into motor would chalk it to piston slap. Said don't be scared of it its just a 4.0 so I guess I'll wait to cross that bridge when it comes. Next step it crawling over it finding what's next. Throttle body spacer worth it for gas mileage? and throaty exhaust without being annoying and expensive and is a Rusty's budget lift going to require adjusting tcase height.mainly want to make it a little easier to get in and out and to get the front end level

Exhaust leak tends to sound more like a spit spit spit on the 4.0... where if you have any of the jeep manifolds, in my opinion they suck.

I'd suggest the widest viscosity range synth or synth blend you can get for the 4.0. 20-50, 10w-50, etc. And Seafoam it, plus add a bit to each oil change.
If the valve cover and/or rear seal aren't leaking, they should never burn oil.
Hesco used to make a cool aluminum valve cover.

Caution, the oil pressure sender on the 4.0 can be quite unreliable, and it only takes about 5 minutes to change.

If you do exhaust, I'd suggest headers, where you might have to go to slightly larger injectors.

The Flowmaster or Magnaflow tend to be a tad annoying after the first 10 minutes on a long trip.

Gibson used to make a really nice cat back....

If you've found a mech that knows the 4.0, I'd schmooze some advice from them--and follow it.

Add 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to the crankcase. If noise gets better, its a lifter. If it doesn't, its a bearing.

Re: engine noise in 2002 wj 4.0l

well I haven't had time or money to do much of anything besides an oil change, but this is a video I had taken before the oil change (with 10w-30 and wix filter). it doesn't make the noise after cold start until it idles down from the start. Any ideas?
