engine noise in 2002 wj 4.0l

well I just bought a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 liter it has a knocking noise that seems to be worse on cold start up and once it warms up gets lighter i have read and watch videos that say it could either be a piston skirt or lifter rattle any suggestions on diagnosing and or fixing thanks in advance.

Re: engine noise in 2002 wj 4.0l

I'm not familiar with the 4.0, but from hearing it seems to be a bit noisy engine. A bad hydraulic lash adjuster will cause a ticking noise. You will need to remove the cylinder head cover and feel of one or more lifters show play. If so, you can change the adjuster.
If the problem is piston slap, then there is not much to do to it. If it gets too bad, then most probably the whole engine will need a rebuild with oversized pistons.
How is the oil pressure?

It needs the valve cover gasket so I will probably check them when I replace it.

Do you live in a very cold area? Normally 10W30 is recommended for the 4.0L.

Well it has been in the mid 20's to low 40's in North Carolina. The guy I bought it from had a tech at meinake look at it and he said probably an exhaust leak but I'm doubting that

Re: engine noise in 2002 wj 4.0l

It could be the exhaust manifold gasket which is leaking, maybe even one of the manifold bolts broke.
I just see now in the SM that the hydraulic lash adjusters for the 4.0L are inside the block and that the head needs to be removed to be able to remove the adjusters. So you better check all other possibilities first.
Regarding the oil, 10W30 is the preferred oil for the 4.0L from 0 F and above.

Re: engine noise in 2002 wj 4.0l

OK i'll change it soon thinking about the sea foam treatment just for giggles and try and clean up. Man I sure do appreciate your help you've posted in everything I have put up and been very helpful with it all. I will hopefully get some things done (the nss, overhead display, valve cover gasket, and exhaust manifold gasket) when the weather breaks around here maybe next week and will defanitly post back my results. PS. Regarding the nss its been warmer today and haven't had to start in neutral but once

Re: engine noise in 2002 wj 4.0l

A piston skirt is just the lower side of the piston, where it runs inside the cylinder. Piston slap happens when the piston in fact is too small for the bore and the piston can tumble a bit inside the cylinder and cause noise when it hits the cylinder wall. A broken skirt would normally mean severe internal damage.

Re: engine noise in 2002 wj 4.0l

Can you hear if it comes from the head, or more from the lower end? A mechanics stethoscope could help in pinpointing the source.
