Engine start button

I know the newer jeeps come with the push to start feature and was wondering if there was a kit to install this on my 2002 laredo. I'm not talking about remote start, just the button that is where you would normally insert the key to start the car.
Thanks!!

Is that one of the ones where you still have to insert your key into your original ignition and turn to the on position then push that button?

Correct, the key does have to be in the ignition for the button to work due to the chip in the key. I just needed a new project and it looks cool and yes it does function.

Re: Engine start button

Ok well I'm looking for the kind that comes stock in the newer cars. Just being able to have the key fob in your pocket, pressing the brake and pushing the button to start. I see it being kinda pointless to spend money on a push start system when you still need your key. If your going to have to put the key in, in order to be able to push the button, why not just turn the key a tiny bit more.

I know that cars with the "chip" in the key that get these setups have to open up there key, remove the chip and place it near the ignition therefore making the ignition think that the key is there.

I know of a system on eBay that looks pretty legit for around $200. But what I'm mostly wanting is someone with a system like this to chime in and tell me how much work it is to install..

I had a pos Ford focus that had the habit of destroying ignition cylinders and keys, at $25 a key I finally taped one under the plastic near the ignition cylinder and used $2 generic "door" keys from there on out ...I may have to look into one of those wonder if it will work on my 02 ...

Re: Engine start button

Google "guard dog start button". They sell keyless start with rfid remote like you are looking for. The chip can be cloned. Check out some clone boxes for remote start systems.

Basically you are looking several hundred dollars and a lot of custom wiring and modifications to the ignition system. There is also the steering wheel lock to contend with. I bet if you email guard dog they can tell you what would be involved.

IMO, not worth the novelty...but if you tackle it I'd love to see the final product.

That guard dog thing looks interesting ...the steering wheel lock either is or could easily be solenoid operated so that shouldn't be to big of problem ...I should have checked the price of the guard dog
