Four Wheel "Slipping/Popping out"

Hey everyone,

I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee (WJ) 4.7 with Selec-Trac four wheel drive. This is my first post on Jeep Garage, any forum for that matter. Looking for some help with something that I have searched EVERYWHERE for and no one seems to have the same issue as me. I live near Carolina Beach, NC and we have a beach that 4x4 vehicles can drive on. Well my Jeep has been fine the first year but lately it has been acting funny. I keeps "slipping" or "popping" out of four wheel. To be more specific, it sounds like my front drive shaft is "popping" out. The first time it happened I thought it either snapped or literally fell out. I was driving along on the sand and all of a sudden it sounds like it disengaged and there was a grinding noise and the back started to sink. So i stopped, put it in park, put it in two wheel drive, put it back in drive, waited a few seconds, put it back in park, put it back in 4 high, put it back in drive and it rolled right out and didn't do it again the whole day. The very next time I went out, boom, same thing. Did the same process again, rolled right out. This has happened about 4 times total. I do not have it lifted or anything like that. All stock. The two owners before me used it as family cars and I drive it very conservatively. Is it as simple as I need to change the transfer case oil or do I have a bigger issue? Thanks.

-Richard

Welcome to the garage.
Did you check the fluid level first?
There is a good change that the internal chain in the T case is stretched too far and will skip teeth when more torque is requested. Did the noise happen in 4Lo as well?

Thanks for the reply. I have not checked the fluid. I am going to the dealership in the morning to have a recall repair done. Going to grab the fluid when I'm there. I haven't tried it in 4 Low yet. If it is the chain, is there a way/how do I tighten it?

No, there is no way to adjust the chain tension. The only way would be to put a new chain on it. In 4Lo you can put more torque on the chain and it would skip teeth more easily. If it doesn´t make any noise then, there is a change that there is an other internal problem in the T-case.
I would check if there is no metal in the T-case fluid and also check the front diff fluid level and for metal particles.
