A family member has an '02 Liberty and is worried about this. We hear that a "fix" in the meantime is to install a skid plate over the gas tank. IF she were to do this, she wonders where the cheapest place to get an "OEM" part would be?
That was the GM solution to install a shield but some of it at least was plastic. I don't recommend people run out and panic on this. The problem has been around for a long time and a little more information is needed. Installing a piece of aluminum or steel in place may make the problem worse.
Just posted around 2:15 p.m. ET today. Chrysler Group and NHTSA have resolved the recall issue. Details at http://bit.ly/ResolveRecall. (Links to a news release pdf.)
"
Only 1.56 million of those vehicles are actually subject to a safety recall, however; all the Liberty SUVs and Grand Cherokees sold during the 1993 through 1998 model-years.
The remaining Jeep utes, Grand Cherokees marketed from 1999 to 2004, are covered by a much less extensive “service action,” according to Chrysler.
The difference is significant. The recall will involve installation of a protective shield meant to reduce the likelihood that in the event of a rear-end collision gas tanks mounted behind the rear axles of the two Jeep models might leak and catch fire.
A large portion of the roughly 1.2 million vehicles subject to the service action, however, will undergo no modifications. The only modifications would occur if one of those Jeep Grand Cherokees were equipped with an aftermarket trailer hitch, something that appears to increase the risk of a gas tank being damaged in a collision. In such an instance, Chrysler officials explained, the hitch would be replaced by a factory trailer hitch designed to minimize the risk of a fire."
Looks like none of the KJ's I know are going to be affected then because they are all hitchless. Curious to see what the WJ "sheild" looks like. If I can cover it in carbon fiber wrap, I might actually go get it.
Ha, you guys are funny. Dave's will come in toxic green, Tony's in orange. I agree that this is a load of BS, I keep having to tell a coworker that. Apparently everything you see on the news requires an overreaction. When asked if I felt unsafe and responded with a "NO" he looked at me like I was crazy. While that may be true, the WJ is still the best vehicle in its class, IMO.

This is not just a problem with this recall. Our culture is hyper-sensitized to anything that can create fear. Look at political, religious, and other rhetoric. This is the 'Murican way.
I agree that the WJ is still the best vehicle for its time and style. I think that the circumstances of the recall is a little iffy. IMO, it seems to me as though with the amount of Jeeps produced to the number of incidents, it would not warrant a recall but certainly a deeper look into it. It seems as though someone who was affected by the lost of a loved one due to a fire, found out about this happening more then just a few times, and had some sort of power and leverage and made things happen.
Tell me about it...we've got a weatherman here that seems like he's high on meth everytime there are a few bolts of lightning in the area. "TAKE COVER, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!"
Maybe they should install in-vehicle fire suppression systems like the ones placed in some of the police interceptor ford crown vic's. I love it, because an owner installed an aftermarket hitch Chrysler now has to remove it and install an OEM one. I say you made changes to "your" vehicle it is your problem. The society today blame it on someone else.
OK I'm new to the post but very familiar with all the Chrysler line from my first busted and rusted 62 valiant to my 2000 grand Cherokee. Oh yea and I'm an engineer to boot.
I'll stay with the Jeep. When and if I receive the notice I’ll bring it in, sign off and change the oil. Then continue driving it. At 211K miles now headed for 7 figures.
As they say in the business Mopar or Nocar.
