Just this last weekend I went out for some beers with Nick from AIR RAM and we had a discussion about intake systems. Although he is not formally educated in aerodynamics or airflow-related science (I have a B.S in Aeronautical Science but my degree was mostly based on flight training), he does have alot of experience with experimenting with intakes and he stressed the importance of cold, high-flowing, NON-turbulent air.

We discussed what would happen if you were somehow able to install thin "vanes" in the intake. It would straighten out the intake charge, potentially providing more airflow- more effective airflow- because there is less turbulence. Some people have already done so, anything from honeycomb type screens to more crude designs of thin-wall aluminum to create 3 effective vanes in the intake tube.

Something to think about....

Re: Help With Collaborative Guide On Recommended WJ Mods/Additions

Any ideas on 4x4 snorkels and additional airflow.
In the NT we have a lot of dirt roads and bull dust. The snorkel provides cleaner air intake and helps keep water out of the system.
I've often heard it sucking in air (like a turbo) on my mates toyota.
Do you think there is any benefit to adding one on my WJ?
Would they confuse the PCM any??
Most of the boat ramps I access are bitumen these days, but I still occasion the odd camping spot off road.

I forget where I saw it, but I saw a snorkel for a WJ somewhere on the internet today. I'd say it would benefit when you're off roading, hitting up the mud and water and fording through water. I don't think that it would confuse the PCM.

Re: Help With Collaborative Guide On Recommended WJ Mods/Additions

I don't think anyone has brought up the issue of our front seats frames breaking over time due to the largeness our assets. Of course my current one has not broken yet. But my former WJ (2000) did break and I just okie rigged it at the time. ( Used a small pair of vice gripes to hold the frame together)

But now there is an outfit that makes replacement seat frames. http://www.jeepseatbracket.com/

Also don't forget about the blend doors, there is the Heater Treater and BlenDor fixes for that problem.

Interesting find. I just recently had to replace both my blend doors.

Wow! Great to see even more info added and I do know quite a few people have issues with blend doors. Great info!
