Hi All,
Came across this forum while searching for info on my potential next purchase.
I'm considering a 4L LPG or 4.7 LPG conversion grand cherokee over here in the UK as I've got two vehicles pretty close to where I live at a reasonable price which are already converted.
The car will also be my daily drive as I only have to do about 12 miles a day for work and drop the kids off etc.
The cars are 2001/2 models and a friend in work had the 4L standard cherokee and that was good for pulling his pretty large boat.
With a young family I think I've got to lose my VW T4 and start pulling a van so I'm really interested in getting one pretty soon.
Any advice is really welcome as I've got a bit of a budget to stick to and the 4L comes with a 6 month warranty so so far it wins over the 4.7L private sale.

greetings:
my bias leans towards the 4.0 (4L). It is slow. But if you want fast buy something different. It is super easy to maintain, you will find very few SUVs where the oil (drain/filter) and spark plugs are as accessible as these motors. Great history of reliability. Make sure the water pump has been serviced before purchase. Basically water pump, and rear axle seals are the 2 main checks. Itll be fairly loud, but will do you good for yrs to come. Keep the oil clean and the antifreeze/coolant fresh.

I've owned both a 4.0L Cherokee (1998) and currently a 2004 4.7L Grand Cherokee. The difference in power and performance between the 4.0 and the 4.7 is huge. If you plan on doing any towing, I'd suggest the 4.7. It's also a lot more fun to drive. The 4.0, while bulletproof and super easy to work on, it's underpowered in my opinion. Drive them both and see for yourself. The 4.0 is a tank of a motor if maintained. People see huge mileage numbers out of that engine. I've got 90k on my 4.7 and no issues either. Gas mileage is the same in the I6 and the V8 too. Actually, my 4.7L gets better mileage than my 4.0 used to...so it's a tough choice. Accessibility on the V8 is good too. I've had no issues doing plugs or any other peripheral type of engine work/maintenance on either engine.

Welcome to the garage.
Never owned a 4.0 I6, but have heared good things about it. It is coupled to a 4 speed transmission (the 42RE) which is of an older design then the 5-45RFE (5 speed) of the V8.
Gas milage is the same or even better for the V8, but the V8 will give you quite some more power. I had an oil consumption problem on my V8, but after changing the valve stem seals that was solved. Very good and strong engine which will perform well when the normal maintenance is done on time.
Some weak points of the WJ itself, check if the heating works on drivers and passengers side and also if AC works. Blend doors of the automatic AC system are known to break and to replace them the whole dash has to be removed, so expensive repair. Also the window regulators tend to break on many WJ's. I have now 180.000 km on my WJ and nor the blend doors nor the window regulators have given any problems (sofar). Mine has a problem with the 5-45RFE transmission at the moment and i'm rebuilding it, but that was more a problem of our local mechanics who don't know what they are doing.......

The 42 RE trans is definitely the weak link on the 4.0. They can and most likely will self destruct at anytime once you get past the 120k mark. I've had both a 46re and a 42re die at around 140k not towing anything.They're pretty cheap to rebuild but the down time can be a killer.

Many thanks for all the information folks.
I'm test driving the 4L later today and will let you know how it goes.
It'll only be for occasional towing so reliability will be the main selling point as I have a young family to move around.
If it was just for me I'd be with the V8 any day

Not good news Im afraid
I test drove the 4L and at first everything seemed fine. Under the bonnet just a small bead of oil around h/gasket area.
I set off with a gentle pace until I came to a straight then booted it to make sure it kicked down the gears.
The temp went up over 12 o'clock, maybe 3/4s and the engine light came on and wouldn't go out. The garage seemed surprised
Do you reckon walk away from this one??

no good friend. Talking at best failed water pump, probably failed head gasket, and most severe possibility; cracked heads form overheat. These are problems associated but not limited to servicing water pump in a timely fashion (ie: as soon as it overheats 1st time.) This is a great example of a 4.0 maintenance issue. Stay away from overheating 4.0s.

@stonecold - just up the road from here mate is the hill, lovely place!!

Not when you're half way up with a fully laden bergen it isn't lol.

Go with the V8! You're doing roughly the same mileage as me ( I do a little more and am very heavy footed) and I'm around 50-60 per week in petrol.
