Humming/Vibrating noise after CV and Hub replacement

Hey guys -

Im hoping someone can help me shed some light on my nightmare with my WJ.

I noticed about two weeks ago my drivers side CV boot was torn and filled with debris. I decided to buy a new replacement CV half shaft assembly since it was cheaper than trying to rebuild this one. Went to RockAuto and bought a Suretrak and installed it. All of a sudden I developed a whine/humming noise with a slight steering wheel vibration. I decided the hub & bearing was probably toast. Replaced it with a new one hub bearing assembly.

Noise continued, so I ordered a second CV assembly thinking maybe the first one was bad.. Noise continued. Replaced under warranty the hub/bearing assembly. Noise continued... Now im at a loss of ideas of what this could be. I had the Jeep aligned to confirm it wasn't something that was related to alignment.

I checked all my torque settings, made sure nothing was rubbing the rotor, or the hub.

Any ideas what this could be?

Symptoms: Noise heard primarily above 35mph, while on the accelerator. When you take your foot off the pedal, it takes a second and then goes away. The second you hit the gas it comes back.

When hitting something like a pot hole or dip on the road, it makes a quick grind/crunch noise. Almost as if two metal objects rubbed against each other and one was turning.

My thoughts: Being that it comes and goes with accelerator pedal input im pretty sure its not the hub, but some something in the drivetrain (Transfer case, Driveshaft, front diff, cv axel...)

Any input is appreciated.

Are you sure the half shaft has the right lenght? There is a difference in lenght for Quadra drive jeeps. Is the shaft is too short, it will not completely insert into the differential and cause noises.

Re: Humming/Vibrating noise after CV and Hub replacement

Well I couldn't tell you if it was the right length because when I pulled it out, I never thought to check it's size.

The first CV shaft I bought was the "full-time" with Varilock quadra-drive one... After putting it in and test driving it around the block and having these symptoms I immediately did more researching online to find that the "Quadra-Trac 2" system is part-time w/o Varilock and is the same shaft size as the selec-trac. So the second CV shaft I put in it (the one currently in it right now), is supposedly the correct one.

However both sets of CV axels have proven noisy, the first one I put in it (Quadra drive one) was much noisier, this second one is quieter, but still makes noise.

Rockauto's choices: 2000 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 4.7L V8 CV Half Shaft Assembly | RockAuto

I first bought the SURTRACK / TRAKMOTIVE CH8035.

The second one I bought was the SURTRACK / TRAKMOTIVE CH8033

Re: Humming/Vibrating noise after CV and Hub replacement

How many miles are on the Jeep and is this the one with the 3" lift? What kind of lift? What size tires? Just trying to get an idea of possible wear from mileage and additional strain of lift and big tires.
Was there no noise from the original CV, only a torn boot? Do you still have the original to take measurements from if necessary or for further diagnosis?

This is for the WJ which has 248k on the ODO. Yes 3" lift is present. 2.5" Fat Bob's Garage springs, Bilstien 5100's, +1 oversized BFG All-terrain tires.

Lift and tires are 8k (or 7 months old). The lift isn't what is causing the noise, and the tires do not make this type of noise.

The original CV Boot was just torn, the CV joint from what I could see with a flashlight was full of dirt and soot. When I took it out, I never measured it. It just went into the recycle bin. Now its long gone, and I dont have a base to measure from.

Re: Humming/Vibrating noise after CV and Hub replacement

I called my local Jeep dealer and spoke with the parts dept. When using my VIN to pull up the correct part I was told I needed:

Mopar Part number: 5012457AC

Now normally I would have just bought the part from Jeep and hoped for the best, but considering they want $498 for the part, im not inclined to take that risk.

Re: Humming/Vibrating noise after CV and Hub replacement

Just put the side you had changed the CV on a jack and turn the wheel. Do you hear any noise from the diff? Put the T-case in Lo. Now the wheel should not be able to be turned. if it does, then the axle is not well inserted in the diff.

Thanks Frango100 for that idea.. I was so anxious to find out, I got out of bed and went into the garage. I went ahead and started the WJ and turned the wheels left to right and no noise from diff was heard.

Then I put it in 4LO and lifted the drivers side, I got about 6 inches of rotation before it locked. Went over to the passenger side and same thing.

This thing is slowly starting to get on my bad side. I found myself earlier on the web toying with the idea of selling her and buying another Jeep. Its just so hard to part with a perfectly good car that only has this unknown issue making it a pain to want to drive. Usually my morning struggle is which car to take to work... GTI or WJ? Lately the GTI has been wining this quandary hands down. lol

Re: Humming/Vibrating noise after CV and Hub replacement

I didnīt mean to turn the steering wheel left/right, but to rotate the wheel. If the axle doesnīt fit well, you get the same problem when rotating the left or right wheel. 6 inch is a lot, but did you check if the prop shaft wasnīt causing the biggest part of it? Slack in the T-case chain will cause some play on the prop shaft.
