Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

I just did a timing chain replacement in my '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ and when i got it all together my fan is now super loud like a jet engine. My Power Steering is full on fluid.

Also, when i turn on my AC the fan jumps up to that crazy fast speed. Also, now it doesn't seem like it's cooling as well as it did before i changed the timing chains.

Could the bearings be bad? Can i just replace the bearings or do i have to replace the whole Hydraulic Fan assembly?

Love this car and this is the only issue that I have ever had with it. Any help or insight would be appreciated!! Thank you!!

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

Welcome to the garage.
Do you mean that it is loud all the time? Is it just working on high speed all the time? You didnīt forget to install the coolant temperature sensor connector?(in between the alternator and AC compressor). According to jeep you can not change any part on the hydraulic cooling fan( except the control solenoid), but i wonder if its true. If really bad, i would think that it should be possible to change the bearings, but sofar i didnīt hear of anyone who tried to change them.
But in your case, the hydraulic fan motor was working ok before the work done to the engine, so why would the bearings make noise now?

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

It's fine if I'm not running the ac. As soon as I turn on the ac, the fan jumps to this crazy speed and is obnoxiously loud. And, now if there is any load put on the motor (hot day, pulling a hill, etc...) the temp gauge goes to 210. It stays there and doesn't get any hotter but I still think there may be something wrong. I will check that connector.

Thank you for your input!!

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

If the connector is of, it will be in high speed all the time. So that can not be your problem then. It will make a loud noise when in high speed, so that in itself seems to be normal.
Did you check if no hydraulic line can touch the fan? If not properly routed and fastened, there is a possibility that it will touch the fan and make a hell of a noise.

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

I visually looked at the fan and nothing is touching the fan as it is spinning. I checked all the connections and everything looks okay. I don't know if there is supposed to be any wobble in the fan that i would be able to feel? This is only a 2 speed fan right? it only sounds like a Jet engine when i turn on the air.

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

No, this fan is electronically controlled by the PCM and has indefinite speeds. The PCM regulates the speed depending on engine coolant temp, transmission temp and AC pressure. While doing the work on the engine, did you empty the AC charge and service it again thereafter? If so, is maybe the precharge pressure too high?

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

When i did do all the work, i changed power steering fluid and used just a normal fluid. Could that be my problem? I am getting some Napa9800 PS fluid.

Just trying to think of everything that I may have changed.

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

You definitely need to use the correct fluid. I use valvoline and have attached a pic for your reference. It meets manufacturer MS5931

Changing a pump is a pain and is expensive. I have replace two in the past year to the tune of $130 a pump. :slap fight:

Here is the spec sheet on the fluid I used: http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/valvoline_psf.pdf

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

When I looked up the spec sheet for the Napa fluid it exceeded the spec for that MS5931 fluid as well. Hopefully that's my problem!

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

It indeed needs a synthetic power steering fluid and no ATF.
Only wonder if the wrong type of fluid would make the fan go to take off mode when selecting AC on. So you didnīt do anything with the AC charge?

Re: Hydraulic Fan SUPER Loud

Yes we did have to recharge the ac system. I have a set of gauges. I will check high and low sides tomorrow.

Thanks for all the stuff to try!!

Because the PCM (also) regulates the hydraulic fan speed depending on the pressure signal from the AC system, the problem could be there. But besides a too high pressure, the problem could also be with a damaged wire or not well connected connector of the AC pressure sensor.
