Question I feel like....

A five year-old. I started Friday evening tearing into my '04 H.O. so that I can replace the head gaskets. Woah. This aint no bowtie 350. I have pared down many a motor..Heck some pretty exotic ones, for that matter. I even ported and polished a few. But, WTF Daimler! This engine ran like a meth-head on coke sipping Red Bull before the #8 cyl rendered the head gasket useless on the passenger side. Plug is un-factured. Valvetrain looks phenomenal. Cams are marble smooth. Even removed the exhust manifold bolts and collector bolts(with ease) and no breakage. Now, I'm at the head removing point, and have concerns. Can I remove the cam sprockets and just take the heads off since I'm going to use a new chain set and guides...Or am I missing a step? I also have the Chrysler master cam and timing tool set from OTC. Advice? Thank you all, a million imaginary dollars. (hey if the US treasury cam make imaginary money, so can I)

Re: I feel like....

did you align the tdc mark on the harmonic balancer with the tdc mark on the timing cover? If so...the V8 mark would be at 12 oclock on the cam sprockets. Mark the cam sprockets to make sure they are returned to the same position. Heres a good walk through...

Thumbs up Re: I feel like....

Solid. Yes. I have run the engine around till the crank damper mark lined up with the mark on the timing cover. The secondary sprockes are BOTH "V8" at midnight. I was mosly interested in knowing if I could now remove the sprockets to enable head removal. There is light tension on the top of the secondary chain and the bottom of the chain which runs down the chase into the idler sprocket has slack. Not loose, just not tight like the top. I want to get these heads off and off to the machine shop for a nice hot tanking, valve seals, guides and pressure check. More input? THANK YOU for being so responsive. I value good info.

Re: I feel like....

When I am replacing the timing chains I do like to kinda line everything up simply because it is easier when there is actually something to grab to roll the motor over when its assembled... from there the new timing chain set will have plated links you line up to marks on the primary and secondary chains... so long as all your marks line up with the plated links you cannot be wrong.

Thumbs up Re: I feel like....

So..Got the engine mostly reasembled this weekend. Heads got shaved .5 and trued up. New guides and seals. Cleaned up real purty. New gaskets. New bolts. New timing set. Had an issue with the FEL-Pro timing cover gasket set since the cooling ports nor the upper port gaskets matched. Everything reflects the engine and year fitment..but no dice. Crank seal is spot on. New water pump. Hoping to maybe get it started this week if time allows. Tired of driving a base model Toyota Camry. No substitute for a Jeep! Good day, all.

Re: I feel like....

The most blessed mechanic ever! Got to the point last night, where it was do or die with the Jeep. Took the fuel pump relay out of the p.d.c and cranked the machine over 3 or 4 times to pump up the top end and lube the rest of the rotating assy. Sounded good. Put the f.p relay back in it's spot and said a little prayer and crossed my fingers and.....VROOM! Smoke show for about 10 minutes and bled the cooling system. It's ALIVE. Runs fantastic. This forum is one of the most valuable and knowledge-able on the web. If anyone has questions regarding headgaskes or tearing the engine apart on the 4.7 platform...It's all still very fresh in my mind. Thanks all. If you live in the Ohio area btw> Canton Auto Machine Service (we call them CAMS) does a fantastic job rebuilding and machining heads.
