Ignition key won't turn

So I purchased and installed a new OEM cylinder lock. No problem with the install but when done key turned, dash lit, but engine would not crank. Put old cylinder back in and after I wiggled it to get it to turn, car started. Tried new cyl again with no start. Spoke with jeep parts staff and service advisor and they were both firm that since I was using original key no reprograming or resetting was required. They suggested I make an appointment to have problem diagnosed.
Any ideas please on why car won't start with new cylinder?

Re: Ignition key won't turn

Welcome to the garage.
The key should not have any influence on the starter motor operation. A not programmed key (but ofcourse fitting in the cylinder) should make the starter work. The engine should even start with an invalid key, but will shut down after a few seconds. What was the reason that you changed the key cylinder, that it was only starting by wiggling the key?
Is the new cylinder exactly the same as the old one?

Re: Ignition key won't turn

Thank you Frank. Yes I originally changed the cyl because I had the wiggle the key to get it to turn. I am using my original key which the parts guy also used to set the tumblers in new cyl. The new cyl is exact except for (1) black plastic piece on new is white on old, (2) shape of piece next to clip which holds cyl in is different and (3) small recessed white plastic piece which engages with the ignition switch is recessed slightly more on new cyl. Parts guy said none of these differences would matter. I will try to attach pics and send another reply. I already lost this reply once. Cyl with key in it is the old one.
Thank you for the help Frank.

Re: Ignition key won't turn

With the new cylinder in place, does the key turn until the start position, or can it not reach the start position?

Re: Ignition key won't turn

That is strange. Looks almost a problem with the ignition switch itself. If you turn the ignition switch without the cylinder in place, will it then start?

I'd tend to agree it is the ignition key assembly.

Had a dealer argue with me for 3 months, "oh those never ever fail" until I just bought the thing and installed it myself. Prior to swap, it might have started if you wiggled it and held your nose just right. Afterwards, fixed.

If you have a wiring diagram and a cheap meter, you can check to see if it is getting the signal... dunno on yours how the transmission interlock inhibits key signal though.
