Injector fuse has blown twice in the past two weeks

For the second time in two weeks my GC (2000, 4.7L) has blown the 15 amp fuel injector fuse. Obviously thereís a problem but Iím not able to reproduce it with multiple starts. I have a multi-meter but I donít know how to use it to check for a short of the injector coils. Iím assuming I use the ohms setting but where do I place the multi-meter leads? Also, I get about 5000 ohms in the injector fuse location in the PDC. Am I reading this correctly? The analog meter needle goes up to 5 and the dial is set to the ďX1KĒ ohm setting.

Re: Injector fuse has blown twice in the past two weeks

The fuse which blows is fuse #26 in the PDC under the hood? At this point i would not expect an injector to be the problem, because if an injector is shorted internally, it will stay shorted (not a 100% guarantee though)
This looks more as a shaved wire, which shorts out in certain circumstances. (for example, during acceleration the engine moves a bit due to the torque. This can cause a wire to touch some metal part and over time the insulation wears through and it shorts out)
So i would start doing a visually check of the wire bundles, especially where they run close to metal parts. Check for any shaving of the isolation.
If you want to measure the resistance of each injector, then you have to disconnect the connector on each injector and measure in ohms position between the two pins of the injector. Normal resistance is between 13 and 15 ohms.

Yes, number 26 in the PDC.

I took the resonator off to allow a somewhat better view of the wiring. Nothing stands out as a problem except for original black tape that has become brittle and pealing in areas of the wiring. I think the best I can do at this point is to remove old black tape and re-tape what I can.

Yes, that is a good idea. When the old tape is off, you can have a good look at each wire separately. Maybe that you will discover anything then. You could eventually take one connector from an easy accessible injector of and measure for short to ground, while you move the wirebundels and individual wires. If this all doesnt reveil anything special, then you could measure each individual injector resistance and see if maybe one has a quite a bit lower resistance then the rest, which could point to a bad injector.

Re: Injector fuse has blown twice in the past two weeks

I decided to test the ignition coils; 1 thru 6 since they are easy to get to. I’m getting zero ohms on each of them and I thought they are supposed to be around 13. I’ve tried two multi-meters and both show zero ohms. I’m measuring the 2 pins on each injector. I think I’m missing something here.

BTW, thanks for your help Frank.

You mean injectors?

OMG; now I see I was testing the coil and not the injector, such a rookie mistake. I’ll test when I figure out how to remove the injector harness without destroying them. The red tab disintegrated when I tried to removed it on the number one cylinder.

Re: Injector fuse has blown twice in the past two weeks

The small red locking tabs become very brittle over time and they break easily. No worries about that, because they are in fact a latch from the connector lock. So without the red tabs, the connector will still lock. On my engine they are all broken.

Unplug all the injectors and ug back in one at a time. See if and when fuse blows that's the bad injector. I myself have never seen an injector short and blow a fuse. But hive it a shot, try mobin harness around too and watch for fuse blow.
