Angry Instrument cluster lights won't go out.

I switched out the bulbs in the instrument cluster with LED's, & they worked ok for awhile. Then, Today one started flicking on/off on the left side, so I tried to switch the LED's from the right to see if the socket wasn't fitting in right. (All this was done with the vehicle running & the lights on.. I know,,Very Stupid!!) First the lights went dim & wouldn't shut off. After a little fussing around, the lights are lit bright and now they WON'T GO OFF. (I did notice a little 'zip/buzz' when I put the bulb in.) If I shorted something out, why does the light bulb work & all the lights stay on CONTINUALLY even when the vehicle is OFF & EVERYTHING else is OFF? Last time I shortened something out, NONE of the lights worked. What is going on? Will this drain my battery to where I should be concerned? (They are LED's). I am at my wits end with this trying to figure out how to fix this without messing anything else up ! (PLEASE SAVE THE SARCASTIC 'SHOULD'VE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY & ALL THE OTHER STUFF, I NEED HELP WITH THIS.) Somebody PLEASE direct me in the direction I need to go into now, SERIOUSLY. I ALREADY KNOW I messed up, positive help & no criticism PLEASE! Thank You in advance for any help.

Re: Instrument cluster lights won't go out.

Do all the warning lights stay on, or just a few? Even with the ignition in off, they still stay on? Did you already try and disconnect the battery for a few minutes and check again? The instrument cluster is an electronic controlled unit, so it can be that it just frose up with the bulb change. No experience with LEDīs, so i donīt know if they can have any influence on the clutser functions.

Re: Instrument cluster lights won't go out.

It is just the instrument panel, the 'warning lights' are NOT being affected. I did disconnect the battery hoping to reset something, but nothing came from that. They worked perfectly PRIOR to me messing with them today. The lights that are ON is the ones that would come on when you put on the parking/head lights. I have NO idea what else to try or figure out what happened.

Re: Instrument cluster lights won't go out.

You can try the instrument test and see if that will reset anything: with ignition switch in off, push the odometer reset button. While keeping it pressed, switch ignition in run. Now all instrument panel lights will come on, the instruments will do a full sweep and return to normal position and the odometer will count 111111111, 22222222 etc. As soon as the test starts, you can release the odometer button.
If this doesnīt do anything, then iīm afraid that something blew up from the electronics in the cluster.

Re: Instrument cluster lights won't go out.

I tried that also. I myself believe that there is something that 'blew' in the cluster itself. I just went outside to start the Jeep to check the battery, & the LED's were ON ALL Night, it DID NOT affect the battery in what is 18 degrees outside now. I Don't think it will affect the battery too much since I usually run it at least once a day, but the thing is I still would like to get another cluster due to the fact that if something blew, I DON'T want that to affect anything electrical & possibly cause a 'short' or some other malfunction. The only thing is my Jeep has approx. 111,000+ miles & finding one with something that close without having to have the computer reprogrammed. My '04 has less miles than most '04s I checked on eBay for, & the '99-04 are just as bad. I did however find one (one from an '04) that had 62,000 miles on it, but 1. By the pics that were shown, there may have been some unsightly blemishes on it, but couldn't really tell due to the 'glare'. 2. How do I get someone to actually believe that isn't the actual mileage IF I ever decide to sell/trade it in? (I know, it would be a GOOD thing if a dealer saw that though, if I didn't tell them it was swapped out.) I know that the '99-04s ARE interchangeable & 'plug & play', but IF I get another, I DEFINETLY am going to disconnect the battery like I was supposed to do to begin with. (I'm just SURPRISED that the airbag DIDN'T go off when messing with the electrical & steering column with it RUNNING!) Well, Thank You Very Much for all your help & suggestions, but all those I tried & you CONFIRMED my thought of having 'blew' something in the cluster itself. I Gratefully Appreciate all your help & consideration in helping me.

Re: Instrument cluster lights won't go out.

I don't think that a 04 cluster will work. There seems to be some different programming. For example the oil pressure is not real pressure on the 04, but just a fixed pressure when there is a minimum set pressure or zero. And there can be other differences. Have a look at WJJeeps.com - Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 1999-2004, they normally show about interchangeability.
