you will be happier with the jeep for sure, but i would never buy a lifted vehicle just lift a stock one

The mileage on that 4.0L is nothing, they are solid motors. However, where's it leaking oil? A common issue is that the rear main seal leaks. Not that hard to replace if you're mechanically inclinded, but just know what you're getting into.

I would also jack up the back and look at the rear axle seals. With the mileage it has, I would be suprised if they weren't leaking (if they haven't been replaced). Again, not a hard task but know what you're buying.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I'm going to take it to a shop one day soon to have a mechanic take a look over it and tell me all I need to fix. If the total of what I wouldn't fix isn't too expensive I'll have the title to this Jeep.

The Jeep is on its second owner, and the first used it as a commuter car. I want to get a car fax first, just to make sure the current owner isn't taking advantage of me.
I will probably take the wheels with me. The bolt pattern is 5x4.5, and I'm pretty sure the Jeeps are the same.

Sorry, but the WJ has a 5x5 bolt pattern.

Copied from wjjeeps.com :

WJ Wheels
All 16x7.0" Wheels: Backspacing = 6.0" Offset = 50.8mm Bolt pattern = 5x5 (5x127mm)

All 17x7.5" Wheels: Backspacing = 6.25" Offset = 50.8mm Bolt pattern = 5x5 (5x127mm)

Lugnuts: 1/2" x 20 Torque: 90-120 ft. lbs.

Well that sucks on the wheels... The Jeep is in the shop getting looked over. This makes or breaks some kind of a deal with this one. I like it a lot, but if there's too much wrong, then I wont buy.

Price is way too high. You can get an overland at that price if you shop hard. I paid 7K for one that had 100,000 miles and was immaculate, $2500 for another that I am putting a rebuilt 4.7HO into for a total cost of about $5K. In contrast I bought a WJ with problems like you describe for 3K and ended up dropping in another $3500 to get it safe and reliable, and it is still nowhere near as nice as the overlands. Do yourself a favor- get a used overland. The resale is much better also, you get the rock rails, skid plates, better suspension, leather, wood trim, etc- list goes on and on. Bottom line- a truck that sold for 40K new can be had at 100 - 120K miles for 6-8K$. A bargain in my opinion.

I would be v glad to sell you the 4.0 WJ that i put all that money into for 5K, and pretty much all of the issues are sorted out, runs well, new brake system, new tires, trans is in good shape, new rear axle seals, nice interior, upgraded to meet many of the limited specs etc.
